pavatar.com — Gravatar allows websites to automatically associate an avatar with your comments, however, as opposed to Gravatar (which was recently purchased by Automattic) this service is completely decentralized, meaning that you can host your avatar yourself! No more limits - you're in full control.

Bleh. What junk. Gravatar is so much more reliable these days, especially with Automattic to back them up. Exactly what is it about Gravatar that is limiting your life so much?

Well, it's not that I don't like Gravatar, I just like the idea of being in control myself, not being dependant on a service like Gravatar. Just as I think Wordpress.com is an awesome service, but of which the disadvantage is of not being in control (i.e. I cannot install a plugin if I wanted to). With Pavatar I would be able to, say, serve a different avatar each request had I wanted to. If I'd want something like that for Gravatar I'd have to wait for Automattic to implement it.That said, at the moment, I only use Gravatar ;-)

Umm.. surely centralisation is better than relying on other people's servers to be up all the time in order to make your site look professional? It would be a good and interesting idea, if it came before gravitar...

If you look at the Pavatar spec. you'll see it implements a caching mechanism. The whole point is decentralisation - the URL owner is in control of their own avatar. It works well with the likes of OpenID (and FOAF, if it ever takes off).
