care2.com — On Dec. 31, three provisions of the USA PATRIOT Act that broadly expanded government surveillance authority in the wake of 9/11 are set to expire. Sen. Russ Feingold and 9 other senators have introduced S. 1686, the JUSTICE Act to reform our surveillance laws, including the Patriot Act and the FISA Amendments Act of 2008.

Change that reform to repeal and I'll be happy. This is at least a step in the right direction though,

Russ Feingold is really really cool.

So we're going to fix bad (unconstitutional) legislation with more legislation? I suppose I could fix a leak in a boat by putting another hole in it as well?Repeal it. Get rid of it. Don't try to "fix" it. The 4th Amendment is supposed to prevent any fixing from being needed.

Props to Sen. Feingold, repealing the PATRIOT Act is probably not realistic, but revising it to add checks and balances to preserve our civil liberties is preferable to fast-tracking it without amendment (isn't that how we got here in the first place?).

Or... repeal the f**ker and do it right this time.

Agreed. Now we just need to get a congress with the fortitude to get it done.

He made a lot of promises back in 2008.
