I had to take a class in the middle of that clusterf**k. They're even uglier up close. It's nice that they've tried to make the hideous high-rise towerblocks pretty in some ways, but they've done it in a cheap manner. They ring the city and no matter what colors they dressed them up in, they still look depressing and run-down.
BTW, Nanterre is actually filthy rich, being the prefectural seat of Hautes-de-Seine, the wealthiest department (like a US state or county), just west of Paris. Why they've kept these monstrosities around is beyond me.

Yes, these are the projects. I actually was photographing these buildings from ground level right in that neighborhood and got pushed around by some teenager (probably wanted by the cops) who was concerned that I might be taking his picture. Needless to say, his friends were nearby and my buddy and I got out of there pretty fast. It's a good thing I'm fluent in French and could tell what he was saying.... No tourist will really find themselves in this neighborhood as it's out of the beaten path and way out by La Défense. Very cool buildings, though. Much different than the rest of Paris.
