tvnz.co.nz — Ashley's family say his parents wanted to teach him a lesson about the consequences of breaking the law. He had taken his mother's car without permission so they had him charged him with theft. But on the trip to Auckland Central Remand prison, he was believed to have been strangled and assaulted by two others in the (security) van.

Imagine the creative forms of revenge the kid would have learned in jail to use on his parents.

Everyone keeps saying something along the lines of, "The penal system isn't a family discipline toy". However, family discipline itself isn't a toy. It is a serious thing for the 17-year old to have taken his parent's car, and serious consequences needed to have been brought down on him. He was seventeen years old, not twelve. The parents treated him as if he was an adult. However, he had still committed a non-violent crime, and shouldn't have been transported with violent criminals. Which brings me to the fact that we need more specifics:Were the prisoners that killed him already being charged with violent crimes? Also, in the video they say 'jail' but in the article they say 'prison'. Two different things there, and I'd like to know which it is.

WHAT?I detailed how I do have kids and those parents should go in the SUCKY PARENT HALL OF FAME. Of course the jails, company are responsible as well. However, the parents are equally culpable for putting their child in harms way. Why should they bail him out? BECAUSE THEY ARE THE f**kWADS WHO HAD HIM ARRESTED FOR BORROWING THEIR CAR WITHOUT PERMISSION.jiminy cricket. and we wonder why the world is a f**ked up place.

@joerastamanNot to mention, if it's a felony (in the US), he would never be allowed to vote or own a gun for the rest of his life.Still, what do you expect? What are you supposed to do if someone steals your car? What if your kid is into other bad s**t? At the age of 17, it's beyond sending him to time-out and hoping he learns not to steal cars / shoplift / drink / smoke crack / whatever. The parents may not have done the "best thing" they could have done, but their choice was not inherently bad, either. The parents are not responsible for a s**tty prison system that lets something like this happen. Blaming the parents is just flat out idiotic.

@AtlantaFalcon: My first name is Ashlie - named after my grandfather. Where my father lived, he only knew of three people named Ashlie/Ashley: his father, his grandfather, and that guy from Gone With the Wind. (You know, the movie that has scenes in Atlanta?)For the record, my parents are great parents.

What the heck is gone wrong with prison system in USA?I don't think it should be called a normal thing that prison is a dangerous place. And those who've killed him must be punished.

I don't know about bad parenting! Strict yeah! But bad?I think they abused the justice system by charging him instead of dealing with him directly. But maybe the kid was a holy terror and they'd run out of options. They must be devastated that they set it up so they could get their kid killed!Yup, prison's a dangerous place!

No, they don't. Parents with kids like this end up getting murdered for the insurance money.

As do I those pig f**king worthless pricks they are. I had parents just like them, and while I did nothing to this extent I had comparable penalties....not death of course, but I mean my mother tried raking me through the penal system for petty things. No theft, no harm, just staying out with friend late (curfew). People wonder why these days kids kill their parents. Stories like this answer that question.

Exactly. f**king Christians! They probably thought he was going to be singing f**king jailhouse rock with Elvis in his blue suede shoes and that everything would be all peachy. f**king idiots.

Holy s**t you've got to be the dumbest mother f**ker on all of Digg. How many f**king kids would sneak out with their parents car at night to impress some girl? It is totally different then stealing some random strangers car, you f**king sick ****. If you have kids, god forbid, I hope that the government takes them away and puts them with someone who knows what the f**k to do with them. It's not about the fact that the kid got killed on the way to jail, that is just the topper. The fact is that prison, no matter how you look at it is a f**king s**t hole. People do drugs, get killed, kill, get raped, rape, etc... You think that because some kid took out his parents car at night to get some ass that he should be tossed in to the slammer to get f**ked in his? You have to be Christian or of some other equivalently uneducated s**t religion. (I mean one of those f**ked diluted blindly devout, who can see no wrong with a good part of the world and think that learning lessons are the most important thing in life.) Hopefully, these parents learned a good lesson from all of this at the very least. What lesson? As Maynard James Keenan said "f**k Your God!"
