I want to know how much money the stores save by asking everyone for a receipt. It hardly seems worth it.

I'm of no specific political stance but you bloody liberals and uneducated kids have buried every comment that goes against the Marxist agenda. You don't have to agree with everyone but you should actually listen to their opinion. This guy should have just handed over the receipt, if you owned a store would you allow people to pass who MIGHT have shop lifted? The security guard didn't know he'd paid, and showing the receipt would have ended the matter. Refusing to show it is exactly what a shop lifter would do, if you act like one people will think you are one.

AND just to remind people. ASKING FOR A RECEIPT and you WILLINGLY showing it is NOT a violation of your rights (such as when you AGREE to this willingly at a membership store) BUT it is important to not let technicality get carried away.COMPELLING you to show your receipt against you will and DETAINING you if you refuse is DECIDEDLY illegal.

For those of you saying "it only would've taken a few seconds to show the receipt," yall are completely missing the point. He does not have to and if doesn't want to, that's fine. And there is truth to the idea that a slow erosion of our rights eventually leads to a complacency where we allow the government to take even more rights. Granted, not showing a receipt isn't exactly a great courageous act in and of itself, but if more people held the ideas of this guy, we'd be more vigilant. Instead people are happy to be pushed through like cattle and doing exactly what their told. What's REALLY ridiculous is those that say "I can see not showing the receipt, but you should've shown the cop your ID." That would pretty much defeat the entire purpose. The argument that the cop can't know if he's a criminal without checking his ID forgets one very simple ideal that our country was founded on: you are innocent until proven guilty. It is not the job of law enforcement to sift through everyone looking for the criminals, they must have a legitimate reason to THINK you're a criminal before they can explore further. There is no federal law saying you must carry or present ID in the situation he described, but some states have different circumstances that require you to have it. There should be no reason for you to carry or present it unless you're driving a motor vehicle, or showing proof of age or other similar situations. It is not your burden to prove to an officer or anyone else exactly who you are unless you've committed a crime. It's amazing this cop pulled this crap, and I don't understand how it is that the store manager can't be charged with some form of false imprisonment for not allowing them to leave when he had no right to hold them. When the cop finally figured out he screwed up, he tried to drag up whatever he could to charge him with, and I can't imagine it will stick. Nonetheless, the author is out all this time and hassle for doing nothing wrong. He didn't even really actively exercise his rights, it was more passive. However, he had the nerve to challenge the cop's authority, and we all know what happens when you do that.We have to eventually buck this culture of complacency that we have about our individual rights, because they are slowly being taken away. Benjamin Franklin said "Anyone who trades liberty for security deserves neither." I get what some of you are saying that showing a receipt is a minor thing, but it really is an overall attitude that we develop over time, and once we accept these things, it becomes more acceptable to us for the government to reach a little farther into our lives. There are too many things that business or government does that we just shrug and say okay, when we need to actually use our brains and realize we shouldn't put up with it.Being on "private property" doesn't eliminate your basic rights. Circuit City should post a sign, then it would be okay? Why don't you post a sign at your place of work saying "Anyone who comes in here may be shot at random," then shoot someone, and tell the court it's okay because you put up a sign. There are situations where you can agree to give up certain rights, but that doesn't apply here.I'm trying not to ramble, but I'm ashamed at the response of a bunch of these people here. It's frightening and it's sad. I only wish to explain the point behind this act so more of you will understand.

as a former walmart manager you are part of the problem and have a very poor concept of customer service

If you don't like the way CC does business, then don't shop there. If he wanted to send the right statement he should have showed his receipt, express his anger, and then returned the merchandise. Then he could go to some place that doesn't treat customers like that. If enough people do that then CC would change it's policy.

I'm referring to the guy in the store, whining about being asked to see a receipt, not the cop or anyone else for that matter. if i was the cop i would have roughed him up just to prove a point that the police have far better things to do with their time than deal with a f**king child who thinks he understands his rights.

It's funny, you don't sound stupid. All the customers, except you, showed their receipts. You left the store in a very suspicious manner, complete with a "getaway car" waiting out front. You put distance and obsatcles between you and the store personell. The fact is, you could have had stolen merchandise in your bag and stashed it in the car after you got in and closed the door. (You claim to be honest, but what if I claimed to be Elvis?) Why would you intentionally cause yourself to look suspicious? Say you're having a party at your house, don't you put your valuable stuff away? And those people are your friends! So why should Circuit City trust you?!?I hope you someday own a store.
