blog.pandora.com — The RIAA has convinced the Copyright Royalty Board to release a ridiculous fee structure that will kill online radio. Pandora, to name my favorite, and others like it will have to shut down. This Pandora blog post explains and has links to online petitions as well as other ways to contact your local congressional representatives. f u riaa!

Internet radio is one of the best ways to discover new music. It is time that we stand up to the juggernaut that the RIAA is becoming. They need to adapt to the new distribution model instead of shove it down our throats. I propose that everyone that supports internet radio as a viable means of media distribution, to boycott ALL media until they comply. Do not buy music, period. Once this goes on long enough and their revenue is $0, they will be forced to consider alternative business models to accomodate the needs of the public. Imagine what kind of a message we would send. Vote with your greenbacks, it matters more than a petition.

@fatdog789Since the article refers to webcast rates, I wanted to mention that the WIPO's Protection of Broadcasts and Broadcasting Organizations Treaty, under point 3.10 clearly states: "The definition of 'webcasting,' according to its criteria, does not cover on-demand or interactive transmissions."Pandora's model is clearly on-demand and interactive, so Canada would work.Location of the Treaty:http://www.wipo.org/documents/en/meetings/2004/sccr/pdf/sccr_11_3.pdf#search=%22Protection%20of%20Broadcasts%20and%20Broadcasting%20Organizations%20Treaty%22

My first reaction was also "this sucks." But, I read a pretty good article that convinced me this actually might get more interesting. If you think about it -- a radio station is just a playlist. If you publish that playlist as an RSS feed, with links to files scattered around the net, you've got a pretty intersting pirate (royalty-free) station. So says this guy:http://advancedmediacommittee.typepad.com/emmyadvancedmedia/2007/03/what_is_interne.htmlDoes this already exist?- Jake

Seems like a fine service. if the sound quality wasn't like a radio transmission 20 years ago.

Pandora in Australia..... gone.RIAA, you're a bunch of F*&KING C*NTS.I hope the US legal system is eventually able to smack your useless, money-grubbing asses into the ground.@randal2k: turning off RIAA-backed artists isn't really an option because the artists don't seem to have too much say in the matter.

Nooooo! I love my Pandora, and Last.fm - this can't be happening. The RIAA just won't stop until they have ruined any possible way people can simply ENJOY music!!!I can't begin to tell you the artists and music I have discovered *because* of Pandora and Last.fm!! Music I never would have found on my own, never would have had a chance to be exposed to. Yet I guess because I don't listen to mainstream pop-crap that the RIAA doesn't really care what music I find and decide to purchase, does it?
