news.com — Palm announced on Wednesday that Treo 600 and 650 owners who have had their units replaced or repaired at least twice are eligible for cash rebates on new Palm smartphones, as part of a settlement of a class-action suit filed in 2005. The company will also repair any Treo 600 or 650 that hasn't failed twice, but is outside of the original warranty

When I had the Treo 650, that was the worst 'smart phone' mobile experience EVER! That thing would randomly crash and re-boot, even with the replacement I got. This was my first Palm experience, NEVER AGAIN. After that, I stayed away from smart phone-like devices until the iPhone. I absolutely love using my mobile phone again for email, browsing. The email feature could be a bit better on the iPhone (searching, push imap, exchange, etc). But if you're browsing the internet, FORGET IT, the iPhone is BY FAR the best device I've used for that purpose.

No offense, but good for you.Meanwhile enough of us poor SOB's who have or had a 600/650 with issues, now have a way to deal with it.

Better to have the same OS being updated and optimized than a newer, bigger, bloated OS. Don't tell me you'd rather have Vista than a better XP....

Back when I first became a Sprint customer, I opted for the Treo 700wx. It wasn't a horrible phone by any means, but it did have some very bad flaws.1) Consider that it ran the Windows Mobile OS. Nothing inherently wrong with that, but that OS was designed for a 320x240 screen. All WM Treos have 240x240 screens. This severely limits your choice of available software.2) That thumb-board is UNUSABLE! I spent more time pressing the keys with the included stylus than I did using any of my digits. On the other hand, they had some things going for them too.1) Consider that the 700wx only had 64MB of program RAM. Due to pre-release optimizations by Pam, it had a LOT of that space free for running apps. Even my Sprint Mogul, which has the same amount of program RAM, doesn't have nearly as much free as my 700wx did. That machine would have been great if they had deleted the hardware keyboard (since it was nearly unusable anyway) and opted to dedicate the entire front face of the device to a nice high resolution screen. They could have devoted some resources to designing a much better handwriting recognition system or on-screen keyboard system for data entry and had a market killer.

Aside from the excellent web browser, iPhones don't do jack! I had one for a week and couldn't wait to get back to my Palm. Typing on a piece of glass sucks! The only problem I've ever had with my Treo 650 is that I literally wore out the keyboard. Compared to a Treo, the iPhone does pretty much nothing. Apple's "my way or the highway" approach to the iPhone is really off putting.
