I find it really handy to download movies and wallpapers directly from the PSP's webrower, i wouldn't hassle with hooking up and ipod and unzipping files to it. People who buy the Video Ipod and more likely to use it for music, Im not a big music guy so a PSP is right for me.
What everyone seems to be forgetting and was totally missed in the comparison is that The iPod, isn't a networked device, therefore it doesn't allow for streaming (like Sony's new LocationFree TV for the PSP). There is no built in 802.11, what a big mistake. The fact is that even though 802.11b is not a fast networking solution, it's fine to stream video on a small screen like the PSP. The iPod doesn't have this functionality, everything has be to downloaded and stored on the drive.. Someone in the comments was complaining that you need a large memory stick to store things on, well not true if you are streaming the video from another source (say your home network). The iPod screen is too small and even if I was waiting in a long line I wouldn't enjoy watching a TV program with that small a display. Yes it's pocketable, but the quality of what comes through as an experience is questionable.I have a Windows Media Center PC at home and I love it, it's becoming my jukebox and media library. Now with location free TV, and the already built in picture/video/Music function of the PSP it's like having a Media Center extender. I want something that plays back video that is networkable that browses the web plays games, and all the leisure activities I'd do with a big computer.. The combo I mentioned does it for me.The iPod is a great music player, but I'd never use it as a video device or even to view pictures, it's just too small a screen to really enjoy. Plus the lack of networking is a great disadvantage when sony starts rolling out streaming content thru Connect, or heck just throw in a UMD and watch a movie.I think the iPod with video is more of a novelty and a reactionary product, Apple engineering should go back and re-engineer it with a slightly larger screen and add in Airport functionality.
Oh by the way, the battery life comment is just wrong, my PSP gives me 7 hours of movie time (that's two UMD's folks) that I can watch all the way thru. The PSP only uses batteries when you are using it's two processors for gaming.
Wow there's some angry apple fanboys here. Just from the sound of their words it certainly show a lot of fear coming from them. Most people don't see the fact that apple is just TOO SMALL, Apple just can't complete with Sony. Like every other apple products it is very short lived. The Walkman phone is making a big come back and it's the hottiest phone in Europe right now, and Sony just cant keep up with demand. Just like the Macintosh, iPod will eventually disappear. As for the Video iPod challenging the PSP for supremcy. That will never happen? Why because PSP is the ONE and TRUE portal media device. The PSP support GAMES,Photo, MOVIES, MUSic and Internet. It also have the abilities to stream video from the computer or the upcoming PS 3. In essence the PSP is a complete portal device with everyday experiences, or should i say the complete portal experiences. NOT some halfass video quality and some cards games for the video iPod, like I said the video iPod is halfass machine. Now Apple may have copied some of the idea from sony like video play back but apple did a really POOR jobs on the video iPod. first is the 2 hours limits and the s**tty small screen. The PSP have over 5 hours and show 14 millions colors with TFT screen twice the size of the video iPod. There's also something else most people forget is that the PSP is only 10 months olds vs the iPod 4 years olds. Why is this important? it's very important because Sony was able to build the PSP into a powerful brand in less than One Year. A product that everyone else wants and talk about. The iPod is never as successful as the PSP when it was first introduced. People never even hear of iPod after 2 years after Apple launch the itunes music store. If Apple plan is to get people to forget their tvs and download programs to their video iPod and watch them. Good luck, cause I am not on of those people. The day I dump my LCD 32" inch TV for PSP or much less the inferior video quality of the iPod is the day hell freezes over.
OK Cool it with all of the "OH the iPod will beat the PSP" s**tbecause of the little sales (which i totally disagree with) Sony is new to all of the portable system stuff, remember Nintendo is the one that started all of the portable gaming,....until Sony nocked out a PlayStation Portable. So iPod has been around for about 4 years and it's only been about 10 months for PSP so sales will increase around X-mas time. and PSP ROCKS even though 2 GBs are about 300 bucks
Lots of heated debate on which is the better choice as a mobile media device... Even though the devices are designed for different purposes. There are a couple of reasons I've decided to forego the ipod video. Perhaps you'd like to have a look at my reasons, and offer your opinions.Remember, I'm comparing them as MOBILE MULTIMEDIA devices, not for connecting to TVs, sitting at home with etc.1. Screen quality. I'm not just talking about the size. The PSP screen is truly brilliant - bright, sharp, responsive, and large. The ipod video screen is smaller and duller, although it is fairly sharp too.2. Wi-fi. I'm one of the class of people that does not leave home without a wifi device, be it a pda or psp. Many people downplay this functionality, but fail to realise that as a MOBILE device, this is nigh on essential (at least for me). Checking e-mail, browsing the web, downloading video etc. on the move is really brilliant. Using the ipod confines you to static content. In addition, with PSP this allows live video downloads from the web.3.One more point that some Apple fanatics seem to emphasise is the storage capacity. Great for music, great for videos, right? Sure. However in practise, the actual amount of video that you'll be able to watch is identical, due to the battery life; around 2-3 hours. For music great; but as I said, neither appears to be the best choice for music, so I've chosen differently (Personally, for music, I simply use an NW-HD5, which is smaller, offers a goodly 20GB storage, and has incredible battery life for music).4. Games. OK, this is a given really, but games like GTA LCS and Wipeout Pure mean that the PSP is a true MULTImedia device. Graphics are pretty phenomenal, and in conjunction with the screen will blow you away the first time you see it. Ipod fails to deliver (clearly) in this department, but I realise that some do not need this facility.5. Battery. PSP batteries are removeable and interchangeable, and last around the same time as the ipod video for video purposes. If I want to watch TV, I'll watch it at home. On a journey / flight, I'd prefer to watch whole films, and the PSP is more suited to that. As well as all these points, I am finding repeatedly that the ipod video in essence is still focussed as a music device, whereas PSP truly caters for a multimedia audience. Add that to the growing support for the PSP, as well as potential expansion devices coming in the future, and a growing UMD library. I understand though that some will enjoy the form factor (although both seem to slip into my pockets) and versatility of the ipod video as well - they are both great devices. Still, it seems that as an intelligently tailored, widely supported and versatile device, the PSP is hard to beat.Personally, I'm sticking to my combo: PSP (for mobile internet, e-mail, video, films and games) + NW-HD5 Walkman (Pure music. The way it should be.)
I Totally aggree with you Agonline, because PSP is more of a movie/game kind of portable and iPod Video isn't much of a competitor because it isn't in good quality nor sound. iPod was the best because it had the biggest blow of customers that are in need of 20Gigz of memory for music. so ur totally right
UR STUPID, WHY DO YOU THINK THAT THE PEOPLE MADE THIS???? THEY were the ones who compared it to the PSP, not us, we're just saying if someone did compare it then this is what we'd say. and we know that the iPod Video wasn't made to compete with the PSP.And i'm not a "f**kin kid"
PSP is stupid because you have to re buy a movie that you could already own for the PSP, but the zen and ipod video are better because you can just download DVD movies you own right to them and don't have to pay 20 bucks more for the same movie or for one that's only going go work on the PSP and i have the ipod video and its so easy to upload my movies from my DVD to my mac and on to my ipod video.
do some research, maybe you'll find out that there's a program that can copy ur DVD and convert it into psp format (.mp4) and transfer it to the psp. that program's called PSPvideo 9. so don't diss the psp if you can't find the right info.
The real answer is you must have both. I find the ipod is the perfect music player, my entire collection small enough to fit in a jacket pocket. Plus my entire DVD collection just in case I am caught on a bus ride. The psp is simply not portable enough, in fact I don't think mine has ever been portable at all. Also the proprietary headphones of the psp are really annoying, they keep losing one channel whenever they are knocked. But if I was going somewhere and knew I would want to watch a particular film I would use the psp as it has a larger screen. Speakers also mean that you need not watch that film alone so it is good if you have company. The psp also definitely makes the best photo viewer. The ipod's is a joke, a small screen and if you want to add more photos but have deleted the present photos from your computer's hard drive then it is impossible to do without wiping all previous photos off the ipod. Why the hell would I want to wipe all my photos off my ipod? My use of the two devices has led me to believe that Sony really don't think things through when designing and testing but my opinion of Apple is that they are actually evil and try to wind you up on purpose because they can sit in their castle saying "Muahaha, I bet another million people have just wiped their ipods clear of music and must now reload a hundred CDs into their computer so they can replace it due to our tricksy ipod wiping subroutines." I have wiped my ipod of all its music twice now and it is incredibly frustrating to have a long walk home without a single thing to listen to. As I say both devices is best but if I came to replace either I would replace the psp with another psp, I would replace the ipod with a totally different brand or maybe just spend the money on Memory sticks. The psp is a lot more pleasant to use if not as convenient or portable.
