pspupdates.qj.net — PSP Advance will be available on Nov 9th and works with all firmware versions of the PSP. The software lets you to watch MPG1, MPG2, MPG4, DivX, Xvid, and MOV files on PSP. You can transfer any file from the PC to the PSP via the 802.11b wifi. Looks like the PSP is a viable portable video option now! Can't wait to use my divx collection on the go!

@kirin: Of course, -today- this is all true. But as the quality of video goes up in relation to the cost of bandwidth coming down, this will change. I think "Front Row" is a glimpse of where this is going, really. Don't think iPod - that's just a portable device to play content on the bus/subway/whatever. Think iMac/TV-Out/Front Row/Media Center. Think using an Apple remote to pull up Front Row, receive the latest episode of Lost as soon as it's released in a subscription (a la Podcasting) style delivery mechanism, and then watching it on a big screen. This, I believe, is what happens when this whole thing gets to the bottom of the rabbit hole. When I say "this is just the first step" I mean both in delivery and in playback - $1.99 per episode, low quallity and playing on an iPod to eventually $10 for the season (or whatever), high quality, and playing on your television.Unless, of course, that moron at SBC has his way - then Apple will have to pay him to let YOU download your content from them.

It's a Sony product. It doesn't get bought. It doesn't get used. The f**kers are in the rootkit business, in case anyone's forgotten. Screw these bastards, there's no way I'm going to aid and abet these motherf**kers just to mindless entertain myself with one of there f**ked up toys.

drn666-I still don't know. I mean for 5 dollars a month I have a PVR on my tv that keeps the shows I want in excellent quality, pretty much any show I want to record. They would have to really drop the prices and increase the quality of the show to beat that. 5 bucks a month for any show I want, not just a season pass to one. A Yahoo like subscription service might be nice in that respect for shows. As for size to bandwidth ratio? Aren't the hour long tv shows like Lost and Night Stalker a couple hundred megs to dl as it is? If that's the case, then file size/bandwidth isn't much of an excuse for the quality of the picture. If anything I would bet that the tv studios are going to be the big holdup in the qualit of the shows for a simple reason. DVD sales of tv series have taken off like a shot and if you can sit there and collect full seasons for cheaper than the cost of their sets AND have it in high quality then their sales are going to drop through the floor again. They don't have to share the income of the dvd sets like they do for iTunes downloads, that's why I bet you're not going to be seeing high quality from iTunes anytime soon and definitely not for $10 a season. It's unfortunate but in a way understandable.

Actually, you'd be surprised. I have both a PSP and a video iPod 60GB, and I've been doing some tests:

So much potential, but would advise waiting uintil the full version available. The demo will not play any video and is basically ad-riddled software. Whoever does their marketing needs going back to school - how to put people off or what?

well, ive skimmed thru most of the comments, and im surpised no one mentioned the PVPs by Achros. Mainly the AV400 series. i own the av420 (20GB) Plays both Divx and XviD, basicially every music format, and photos. And the nail in the coffin to all other portable devices. IT. RECORDS. VIDEO. i..what? pswho? :-)Only real drawback is that it only supports XviD single pass, as opposed to the more popular multi-pass vids that get released thru piracy, but we're all already reencoding and formatting our video for the handhelds, so its not that much of a strech.

oh as soon as you get the 3.1.0 upgrade for the av420, all XviD types become playable. Just thought id throw that in there.

The PSP Go should open up some new formats if Sony has any sense - although highly unlikely just imagine being able to play .mkv video files on your PSP!!http://www.pspgoguide.com/
