biz.gamedaily.com — GameDaily reports that Japanese magazine "Ultra One" has discovered PS3 will include the PS2 chipset hardware to provide hardware-based backwards compatibility until a software-based emulator is complete, upon which PS2 hardware will cease to ship PS2 hardware within the PS3, possibly allowing for a small price reduction.

prob not since there are multiple ps1 emulators around. the psp is able to emulate ps1 games as well on much more limited hardware. that said, and given that the ps1 processor doubled as the audio chip for the ps2, there is a chance of it happening though. we will just have to wait and see.

"HDTV enthusiasts will buy the PS3 as a cheep Blu Ray Player and never buy a game."That's what Sony hopes. But in reality, by the time the PS3 is out, there will be Blu-Ray players for $600 and even less.HDTV enthusiasts that don't care about games will want a dedicated Blu-Ray player, and will pay $600 for it, even if in some ways they get less for their money.

I agree. Just from what I've seen of the games at E3, if Sony and the game developers deliver as promised and those trailers were in fact realtime gameplay as they've said, it's clear which console is superior technologically. I was not all that impressed with the hype of the 360 launch titles, and it didn't really look that different from what I've seen before. However getting realistic in-game battle sequences that can barely be differentiated from cut scenes? I know which console I'm putting money in. Even if I have to get another temp job to pay for it. The fact of the matter is those who want it will find a way to get it nomatter the cost. Most of the people claiming their going Wii for the cost were probably already planning to get a Wii to begin with. Claiming they can get a 360 and a Wii or a DSlite and a Wii for the same cost is irrelevent. I love my PS2 and got it because of the GAMES not the hardware or even the cost. And it appears Sony will be giving me more of what I want only better on their next gen. I highly doubt the PS2 chip drove the price up and was an uneccessary addition as some here are claiming. If they didn't add that chip and also didn't deliver BC emulation, I for one, would have been pissed as hell for not being given what they promised from the beginning. This way if anyone loses out it's Sony not the consumer.

I was thinking the same. I wonder if I'll be able to save up enough in time.

I doubt they'll give you that option. I expect that once they've finished their software emulator, there will be no reason to use the hardware emulator (at least in their eyes.)Wonder if you'll be able to use those boot-CD hacks with it...

arm and a leg ? you can get a perfectly functional blu ray player for under $200 if you shop around. i got mine around x-mas, samsung, works fantastic. paid $170 for it. if you ask me it was stupid to bundle the blu ray player with the core system. make it an add on for those that want it, and keep the core system price down in the same range as the 360. not everyone wants to drop $600 on a game console. especially those who don't even have an HDTV set. blu ray is useless in that case.

yeah, but comparing blu ray to betamax isn't exactly accurate.blu ray and HD DVD were contenders for the high def video format, which blu ray won. blu ray is next in the natural progression of video format. 99% of new TV's being made are HD ready sets. why not take advantage of the high def when you replace your set ? eventually all that will be made are blu ray players, the price will drop down to the point where you might as well just get one. betamax was not a revolutionary technology. it had a slight improvement over standard VHS, which a LOT of people already had, and were not going to change. my dad had a VHS deck, my mom had a betamax player. i never really saw a difference in picture quality. i CAN however, see a huge difference from a regular DVD and a blu ray disc.

the PS3 will not make or break blu ray. blu ray is doing just fine. half the people i know have a blu ray player, and it's still a relatively new format. within the next couple years the drives and media will be reduced in price enough that it will become much more mainstream.
