arstechnica.com — One retailer spoke to me on condition of anonymity, and broke down his version of the situation. "It's not that we've gotten more PS3s than Wiis, it's just that no one wants them. We've seen a few returned. We have four in the store right now," he said.

Yea, this may be true nationwide but up here in the north east I have yet to even _see_ a playstation 3 in person.

I live in Western PA, and I rarely see PS3's in stores. The occasional 20GB has been on a shelf or two, but I have yet to see them laying 10 deep on a shelf. I notice that most of the people who comment about how they see a lot usually don't own one themselves, whereas people like me who own a PS3 hardly see them in stores.

Two days ago, the Bloomington Wal-Mart had a PS3 just sitting there. Maybe you need to scope out the bottom of the blue barrel.

I'm seeing the same thing here. Not a PS3 anywhere in sight. Plenty of empty boxes sitting in some of the stores, but when you actually inquire as to the availability, you learn that the boxes are only for promotional purposes and not a reflection of actual inventory.A nearby Wal-Mart had one Wii in stock when I was there a couple days ago, but it had sold by the time I left the store.

@MaynardJK:Are you still connecting Bill Gates statement that 640k is enough for everyone to Windows Vista also?

I happened to be at my local Meijer superstore here in Shelby, Michigan the other night (9PM) and noticed that there was a stack of PS3s sitting in the glass case. I asked the clerk near the electronics desk if they had just put the systems out, and he promptly replied "No, they've been sitting there for a couple days". I asked if the situation was the same for the Wii, and he mentioned that they cannot keep them in stock.I drove over to the Target across the street to find the same situation: PS3s stagnating in the gaming area, while the Wii selling at an unbelievable pace.Word of mouth has helped Nintendo big time on this one."Play to Believe" is damn straight!
