news.com.au — A campaign to rename fish as "sea kittens" in order to improve their image has been ridiculed by the Federal Opposition. Outspoken animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is using the "sea kitten" name as part of its push to restrict fishing. "Nobody would hurt a sea kitten!" the group says on its website.

Ignorance is Strength, Freedom is Slavery, Fish is Sea Kittens!

The circle of life ends in the stomach of the top predator on this planet. Humans. Lions use claws, hawks use talons, and mankind uses cages and assembly lines.

Yeah makeminemanda, I was quite surprised actually. I was warned by my advisor and vet to definitely not put it in my application and to answer very carefully when asked at the interview - rarely aren't you asked about your stance between welfare and rights. Although good advice to ensure I'd get in I am not one to deny who I am based on how others will judge me. Honesty is an exceptional character trait. They were well aware that I've given lectures pro-animal rights in the past and written articles for the local news on vegetarianism and animal rights. I'm -not- the typical activist that the media loves because it brings in viewers. I speak in academic settings, word myself so as not to speak down to others as evil, and demonstrate myself to be passionate about the subject rather than involved in a temporary fad.I've been involved with welfare societies since I was 9 when my mother worked at our local shelter. I don't feel they go far enough in regards to ensuring the best outcome for animals in human-animal interactions. However, the best place to start is from the inside. When I've graduated and make a name for myself I will inch myself in to politics where I can make a difference. But that's me. Not everyone can become a professional in an animal welfare field. Joe Citizen really does not have much say. They need to attract the attention of those who do. It's unfortunate that there really isn't a professional field for animal rights. Veterinarians are the ones who should be standing up for their patients, yet they don't. Hopefully that shifts during my lifetime. Too many take our oath as the cut off point for what we CAN do rather than what must do. We -must- : "[...] solemnly swear to use my scientific knowledge and skills for the benefit of society through the protection of animal health, the relief of animal suffering, the conservation of animal resources, the promotion of public health, and the advancement of medical knowledge."

And.... do you support the initiative to rename fish?

Just not the way PETA wanted it to. (Did they REALLY think this would work for them?)

This reminds me of the time when seafood marketers decided to rename the geoduck (it's pronounced gooey-duck, and if you've seen them, they look like some big animal's gonads stuffed into a clam shell. So saying, they make lovely clam fritters and chowder.) as "king clam", as it had worked just fine and dandy when they renamed spider crabs "king crabs". It went over like a lead balloon, as I think this will. There's a line you can cross when doing something like this, and if it just comes across as too ridiculous, it will backfire on you. So saying, our oceans are horribly overfished, and I support more responsible management of them. Just not like this.http://www.wdfw.wa.gov/fish/shelfish/beachreg/grap ...

Not a very deep thinker, are we? Oh and animals are sentient? The term "animals" includes insects and worms. Are you suggesting they are sentient, too? Please... I've forgotten more s**t than you'll ever know.
