linux-watch.com — Adobe says it has released the full PDF 1.7 spec to the Association for Information and Image Management, which will convert it into an ISO standard. Interestingly, Adobe's announcement precedes the public release of both Vista and Office 2007 -- both of which implement XPM, the so-called "PDF killer" -- by one day.

open source alternative to photoshop - try paint.netwww.getpaint.net/download.html

I have a love/hate relationship with PDFs. They look good, they are usually small in size, and everyone one can read them. On the other hand, they can take forever to load, irritating to download, and there is no good, free, and no open source solution for windows to save changes to pdf documents. I had to use the gimp with ghostscript to edit an important pdf once. This situation is ridiculous, even with foxit. Oh well.

"Apple had to reverse-engineer the PDF specification by itself,"Wow, that would be dumb considering the PDF specification is open and available to anybody interested.

Slow? I'd say Adobe reader is next to unusable! That piece of crap crashes more than Windows ME. :P

@ raynevandunemI don't know where people get this stupid ideas. Apple didn't reverse engineer the PDF spec, do you know how much work that would be!?Apple licenced PDF under the Adobe's existing open licencing agreement, see last paragraph of the wiki article you referenced regarding Adobe's free licencing of PDF. This is exactly what the authors GhostScript and OpenOffice have done, not to mention several dozen commercial applications.Oh, and your first link goes no where.
Adobe creates proprietary software, schestowitz. Shouldn't you bash them too?
Adobe doesn't f**k it's customers and the industry over on a regular basis like Microsoft does. Adobe doesn't implement insane license restrictions and authentication schemes like Microsoft does. Unlike MS, Adobe succeeded without being evil.

@najo: It boggles my mind how anyone can think of Microsoft as being some sort of victim of undeserved criticism. Or are we just pretending to forget the hundreds of standards that Microsoft has actively sought to kill over the years? A lot of companies produce closed software but none even come close to the level of sleaze that Microsoft has mastered, so I don't see where the discrepancy is.The sole purpose of this "PDF-killer" is to take Adobe out of the game. Microsoft has its eye on the big PDF pie and it will use its monopoly to that end. "We see you're trying to save in a PDF file? Why not convert to XPM?" Like everything Microsoft does, their implementation will be just like PDF, but worse, and only run on Windows. <a class="user" href="http://www.grokdoc.net/index.php/Dirty_Tricks_history">http://www.grokdoc.net/index.php/Dirty_Tricks_history</a>

7of7: What the heck are you talking about? How can open standards kill competition? Are you a troll?

@OBK: Adobe has released Acrobat Reader for Linux, and I believe flashplayer was recently delivered too. I use GIMP myself but Photoshop would be huge.
