news.yahoo.com — "There's no denying PCs are losing their spunk in Japanese consumers' eyes," said Hiroyuki Ishii, a sales official at Japan's top PC maker, NEC Corp. "There seems to be less and less things only a PC can do," Ishii said. "The PC's value will fade unless the PC can offer some breakthrough functions."

For casual computer users, there really isn't much use to upgrade a PC that's at least 2 Ghz with 512 megs of RAM. Not many email boxes on the client side will have a huge benefit going from that to an Intel Core2.

When you can dock your smart phone to an external display & keyboard it will be a very practical PC replacement for casual users. High end smart phones are already capable of doing all the tasks most people need. Imagine an iPhone docked to an LCD touchscreen display with a keyboard. What would it be lacking for the casual user? Adding traditional PC features like USB printing, USB storage, etc would be no problem. At that point all you need a PC for is for advanced content creation/editing, programming, and professional quality applications for other specialized tasks.

Typing Japanese in PC has been a pain. If people can find other alternatives, they would use them. That's why PC usage is down. This wouldn't happen in the US. Typing English in PC is perfect.

Yeah, so I'm a day late to the party.... IT still must be said.To Joe Enduser the PC =a) the INternetb) Gamesc) Office crapThe Wii can do 2 of those, so can the PS3. Heck, my DS can do that. When Google Apps starts working well on the Wii - Maybe the Wii Advance, or whatever the Super Wii will be called - then you'll have a drop-in-replacement for the PC with a magic wand controller that plugs into your TV.
