just installed ubuntu 6.10 last nite i find it rather slow on my xp3000+ (o/c) 1GB RAM compared to my stripped down XP Pro, i rather not use XP but it is noticeably faster, maybe its due to the inefficient graphics drivers (ATI 9700 PRO) on ubuntu and too many background processes of the gnome desktop.
I am not a computer pro but I realy want to be independent from Microsoft and his Vista and this weekend I?ve installed kUbuntu (the final decision I taked after I?ve seen on youtube a video with Baryl - 3d ).The instalation was quite easy and I was very enthusiasthic...Then as the first step was to install Opera ( my favorite browser ) - I download the file from www.opera.com and ...where is the .exe file?Well I knew that Linux is a litle diferent so I googled to learn about tar.gz ... With all the efforts I didn?t succeed installing it.Ok, I told to myselfe let?s try with Firefox - this was probably installed so it worked. Youtube video didn?t worked so I tried with succes to install the Flash Player.I veryfied that the plugg in was corectly and than I tried to watch the video - Firefox is crushing down every time whenn I tried...Ok I sad let?s see how It looks the 3D Baryl interface : with all my efforts I wasn?t able to install it.I was desapointed ! I didn?t gave up so easy but a week is gone and I still work an Win... So - Linux developers I?m realy obsed with You. Why don?t you give us a realy friendly sistem to work with? Not all of us are programer...And I realy like Linux and his philosophie even if I can not use it...for now...Me and the other 80% that runs Microsoft doesent have time and the knowing to compile the programs that we need, so please give us a posibility to istall them quick and simple :" 1 click install " and the progrem should be able to work. Tahnks! (Sorry for my bad English - I?m Italien that lives in Germany).
If there were a monetary incentive to make sure it is easy to use then it would be...well, Windows. Without that you're always going to have problems with drivers, weird questions on install, and misc. whatnot.
Had no idea what I was doing. Yes that is the fu**ing problem you know. Oh how Ubuntu is userfriendly. Setting to boot from Optical drive in your BIOS and loading up live CD but getting unexplainable error after I press the install button is not acceptable in user friendliness. Smartass
I found an old t41 laptop with Windows XP - 1 gig of ram and crappy 80 gig hard drive. Got a 120 gig hard drive and loaded ubuntu 9.10 - I love it. Makes browsing very snappy for single core 1.7 gighertz machine. I am gonna buy a new X100E lenovo and load ubuntu on that bad boy. My OS is Firefox, since I do everything in it.

I have tried 60 or 70 linux/bsd os's in the past 4 1/2 years. As far as ease of install, ubuntu is not in the top ten.

It's dead to you but you still boot it up and update it? I don't get it? What's keeping it around then? No I think you use it more than you state.

adding apps is easier in ubuntu than in windows...no hunting around, just go to the friendly synaptic package manager
