If Programs actually coded things according to Microsoft's Specs then you probably wouldn't have any problems but in the Microsoft world people find hacks to make it work or use a lot of legacy functions that Microsoft is slowly removing. This happens each time with apple to. Apple comes up with 10.4 and it causes things to break because people continued to use legacy API calls, and it happened again with 10.5 and will more than likely happen with 10.6. yes it sucks for the user but honestly if they didnt get rid of the legacy api's or win16 compatibility then it would make things more bloated than they already are and then people would complain that there OS is 20+GB

@grumpyrain RE: "but they had to assume someone would click a link in an email and download a file for it to even work.About 75% of the headline grabbing malware Windows outbreaks in the past 5 years have required some similar action to infect the computer."No - that is incorrect. 75% of the headline grabbing malware outbreaks on Windows were due to malware being installed WITHOUT CLICKING ANY LINKS.It's known as a "drive by" installation. Go ahead - google it.
