@schneidafunkI know that's an analogy, but that's the easiest way to explain in layman terms. You're wrong about one thing though, they're talking about a possibility of a 4D boundary projecting into a 5D space "inside". In other words, it's possible that our reality is 5 dimensional, but encoded in 4 dimensions on this theoretical boundary. The principle is the same. This also falls in line neatly with some parts of the string theory.
I was also intending to comment about "The Holographic Universe," which I read at least 10 years ago, but your point about observation versus theory is well taken. Kudos.
