lifehacker.com — Yes, I know iTunes isn't a document organizer, but it does a surprisingly good job at it anyway. Using iTunes' Smart Playlists and its PDF support, you can build a document library where PDF's are automatically sorted into keyword-based lists. Let's get started.

Sounds like you downloaded some poorly tagged mp3s. I've put somewhere between 500-600 CDs into iTunes (backed up nightly, shared across the network to my other systems and my XBMC - for a free software app that's not bad) and have had an issue with about 1% of them. The thing isn't magic, though, and does still require a little bit of work here and there.Maybe you're upset with how the files are actually stored on your system? If you have albums with multiple artists make sure to mark them as a compilation and iTunes will put them all into one folder.

"Smart" and "organized" don't always go hand-in-hand.

I'm confused by the article saying you cannot VIEW pdfs in iTunes. IF you double click the PDF, at least on the Mac, it will open Preview to view the PDF. On the PC, I'm sure it could be set up to open Adobe Acrobat or something similar, correct? The iTunes part is merely the organization part of the equation while the viewing is another and easily accomplished.

It's called antitrust. Everytime MS announces something like this, Apple and Google run off to the Justice Department to file injunctions. It's hard to introduce new features when you get accused of antitrust violations for even the smallest things.

Businesses already use Acrobat Professional to manage their PDF libraries. That's been a feature since at least version 6. (Note: this feature isn't in the freely available Acrobat Reader).

Yep looks really cool. Are there equivalents for Windows or Linux?

@bredvad:Yep, I was going to say the same thing. I love "Yep". It's a dumb choice of a program name though. Try googling for Yep and see how many hit's it returns. Heh. Great program though.

arunsjunk: Thanks, I will try it out. Currently I use JabRef http://jabref.sourceforge.net/ to track bibliography in a BibTeX database and an organized hierarchy of directories to manage PDFS.

I have been using Yep for awhile to keep a "iphoto" like interface of all my pdf documents. Very easy to use and mac like.

As much as I like Perl (being a member of Oslo.pm), unnecessary link spam is not the way to advocate its use.

Nope you can't. With iTunes you can set title, author (or "artist"), year of publication and so on. This is much harder to do with Spotlight, since it indexes the PDF metadata which you need Acrobat (a $299 purchase) to modify. Plus, iTunes just flies whereas Spotlight takes forever.
