blogs.zdnet.com — Can open source succeed where Windows and the Mac have failed? I’m talking here of K-12 education. An eSchools report says open source spending is growing 70% per year, and will be up 800% in 2011 from last year’s level.

Still have XP on all the computers at my school.. but they suck anyways so it doesn't really matter.

My school is in the same situation. In fact, the school, or rather the district, bought dozens of new computers from gateway less than a year ago. All of them have Windows XP. Some of the old computers go to a computer repair class that does cover the installation and basic setup of a Linux system. The computers that are not too physically damaged hum along nicely with Linux and could easily be used for basic student needs. But the old machines are rarely ever used again outside of the computer repair class.

Children changing source code? I'd give an A+ to every one. That's like a teacher complaining about having blackboards b/c the students might discover quadratic equations early...

I work in this industry, schools balk at using open source solutions because there isn't a 800 number, on-site support, and most likely the district next door isn't using it either. The money that could be saved is huge, to tax-payers and the school system. "Technology Directors" often times will not even look at solutions that they do not have previous knowledge of. It is really sad that the strategic technology direction of most schools is based on what a technology department can and cannot fix.

If they write software, they will probably use Linux.
