digitalpaint.org — Digital Paintball 2.0, originally a Quake 2 mod, has come a long way in almost 10 years. Digital Paintball 2 (DP), is no longer a mod, and is now a fully playable stand-alone game, weighing in at just under 32 megabytes. With a strong player-base and a very active community, new maps are produced weekly.

Am I the only one that thinks that most of the FPS paintball games are really bad?

They started working on DP with the Quake 2 engine long before Q3 was announced / released. I guess they never found a reason to switch (the gameplay is impressively good).

Quality cross platform open source games are +digg in my book.

I tried it, but it doesn't seem "up to par" compared with Warsow and Nexuiz (you can get the source for both, both also come pre-compiled for Windows and Linux).

The 'dropgun' command allows you to drop your gun (you can only have one at a time and some maps start you with one). It's bound to 1 by default. You can drop the console using tilde (~) and then type 'bind dropgun' to use a different key. (Or just use the Escape key and use the controls menu)

I'm glad so many of you dugg this game. Hopefully I can answer everybody's questions here:- The sourceforge mirrors are the fastest location to download, and don't require registration to download: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=89601- Tom made a slight technical error when posting this news article. The correct name for the game is "Digital Paint: Paintball 2.0." Paintball 1.x (commonly known as QWPB), a mod for Quake, was made by Quake Innovations. Several members split away from QI and formed a new group called Digital Paint to create Paintball 2.0. Later, another group created "Digital Paintball," a completely unrelated mod for Half-Life.- There is currently no OSX port. Several people have offered to make one but disappeared. I do not personally own a Mac, so I can't really develop/test for OSX. We should have a Mac port some day, though. It may just be a while.- Quake 3 may have been a better starting point, but we started well before Quake 3 existed. It would be too much work to start all over again with a new engine. Zimbu, one of the members of the Paintbal2 community, made a Q3PB mod, but it never really took off. There was also another Quake3 paintball mod called q_ball that didn't take off much, either. There's something about Quake 2 that we know and love, and we'll be sticking with the Q2 base, though with time it will probably cease to look anything like Quake2.- Parts of the game do look very dated. There are still graphics in there from 8 years ago. We're slowly working to improve the appearance of everything, but it's a slow process for hobbyists to get a game to look on par with professionally built games that had budgets in the millions of dollars.- The game is still "early" in development, thus the "alpha" versions. It should be very stable, but there's still a lot of work that will go into the game to improve it.- For those confused as it's your first time playing: Make sure you're on a team (hit ESC and select Join Team). You can only carry one weapon at a time. The default key to drop a gun is 1. Barrels increase your accuracy. The default key to throw a grenade is g. You can figure most of the stuff out just by going through the configuration menus.- If you want to provide some feedback on the game, the best place to do that is on the forums: http://dpball.com/forums/ Unfortunately they've just been relocated, so sendmail hasn't been configured yet, and you will not get an activation email. Just make a post in the help section with the name you've registered and I'll manually activate it for you next time I check the forum for new posts.I'd like to say thanks to all the people who have checked out the game. The servers were lit up tonight -- lots of new players. Hopefully some of you will stick around and become part of the Paintball2 community.
