tectonic.co.za — Some of these installs were done using the free Community Edition, "which works well for small to medium-sized businesses," says Wilson. Added to which, the AJAX webmail feature blows its competitors "a mile away". "It drives like an application," he enthuses.

Amen!Novell's making quite a push with Netware on Linux, but it's not going to cut into MS's marketshare anytime soon. Until there's a comperable network operating environement that is as easy to set up and configure as Microsoft's Active Directory, OSS platforms will go NOWHERE in the business world.

Downloading Zimbra OpenSource version now.If it works half as smoothly as their hosted demo, I have a new email server for my family and friends.

The company I work at had lots of problems with stability with their old Exchange 2000 implementation, but when they upgraded the same old hardware to Exchange 2003 all their problems disappeared. It sure does a great job of serving the 9am morning logon rush!

@evetsleep: If you have never had to babysit 5.5 (or even 2003!) before it got patched / service-packed, then you most definitely haven't been an Exchange admin, *especially* at the enterprise level.Yeah, today we are spoiled by a stable, mature product. Not so in years past. Wait until E12 is released. :-)

In 2002/2003, I futzed around with many open groupware / echange clones trying to save a buck and support the FOSS scene. When I got my trial for SBS2003, I never looked back. Rock solid, features out the wazoo, and so easy to setup and use. Also, WAY cheaper then most of the solutions that have been listed here. All these people saying "for small companies, exchange can be quite expensive" make me cry.$500 hardware from Dell, $299 action pack from microsoft, you are up and running. Upgrade the hardware as needed.

Come on, where are you getting these prices. I've gotten Enterprise Server for as low as $600.00 for a 25 user license, but Exchange??? Lowest price I've found for a 25 User Exchange License is $4000.00. If you're getting lower pricing than that, it's probably not legal. As for Exchange being Ajax compliant, try using web mail with Firefox, you have all sorts of issues, because you have no Active X functionality. True Ajax based products, like Scalix & Zimbra will work just as will with Explorer as they will with Mozilla based clients. I recently upgraded one of my clients from an MS server running Exchange, to a Xandros Server running Scalix and I can tell you that during the transition period when we still had some people running Exchange and others running Scalix, I had absolutely no problems with Emails on both ends, but with my customer looking to have to pay several thousands of dollars more to add 10 users to the network, it made a lot more sense to go with a Linux system, especially if we didn't have to pay so much more for the additional users. The additional stations were added using Xandros Business Desktop, using Evolution, and the emailing & Calendaring work between outlook & Evolution flawlessly. In addition, the couple of Macs on the network were now able to be added to the server and share files without any issues. Something that would somehow constantly "Break" on the Windows Server. While I did have to pay about $500.00 for Xandros Server, it included 5 Business Desktop Licenses and 25 Premium Scalix Licenses with the installation, so it was a great deal. Add the $500.00 that I spend on a low end Dell Server to run it all, and it still worked out to A LOT less than what it would have cost me to get a 10 User CAL for MS Small Business Server (about $1800.00). To top it all off, I can still add another 10 users to the system (25 total) before I even need to think about licensing issues again.

Well guys, looks like the Party's over with Scalix, one of my clients is a small, barely profitable company with 15 users currently using the free 25 user community license, the new version, while including such goodies as full offline smartcache support, RPC over http connnections (no need for VPN) and full outlook 2007 support, they've also added one other nice little surprise, they went from 25 users to 10 users on the Premium Licensing (ie, outlook support). Looks like Xandros wants to make their money back quick.

a good web based exchange alternative is <a class="user" href="http://www.hyperoffice.com.">http://www.hyperoffice.com.</a> it also has integrated sharepoint alternative features in it (messaging and collaboration in 1) which makes it pretty comprehensive

Have you seen Zimbra's road map? Pretty impressive. With version 6 likely available this year, it's got 40M+ mailboxes and its development is still going strong. <a class="user" href="http://www.zimbra.com/products/roadmap.html">http://www.zimbra.com/products/roadmap.html</a> They've also got a strong partner network, I've been trying it out every now and then to see the changes with a Zimbra hosting provider that provides automatic activation and free 30 days, so I don't have to pay, <a class="user" href="http://www.01.com">http://www.01.com</a> , I wish my company didn't have such a reliance on Msoft.
