desktoplinux.com — Novell openSUSE project has had a recent history of trouble with its update programs. Now, to make updating openSUSE more pleasant, the project is dropping its support for ZENworks and opening up YAST to community development.

I installed Opensuse 10.2 on my new server because it seemed to build the sofware array much faster than debian. But one thing I CANT STAND is installing packages via yast. Is there any alternative to Yast that works reliably on SUSE similar to apt-get or aptitude?

You can use SMART which is quite similar to apt.

SUSEs package management was alright before they were bought out by Novell. After that, it turned into chaos because Novell wanted Zenworks, Redcarpet and other stuff that should really have been left for SLED to be put into openSUSE. I am glad they are getting rid of zenworks on openSUSE, because its been nothing more than a nuisance.

openSUSE is heading back to the track. Now, if only Novell takes the hint, and puts SLED back on the same track. Steven
