macworld.co.uk — Until now the software has required that users install the X11 Window System, a graphical interface that lets Unix-based applications work on Macs. The new version of the software won't require X11, and will work just like any other OS X-native application.

In the meantime, Mac users who want a *TRUE* Mac-Native experience (ie - proper menus, no X11, Aqua, and everything) - don't have to wait. NeoOffice ( <a class="user" href="http://www.neooffice.org/">http://www.neooffice.org/</a> ) has been around for years - and they are now completely Aquafied.

NeoOffice uses Java, which smells really, really badly (apart from it being cross-platform).

I stay away from openoffice.. it's just too damned bloaty. Star Office was horrible bloatware, and OO.o really isn't any better. On linux I'll stick with Abiword and Gnumeric. I don't need an office suite anyway. Just to be able to read the occasional Word document and to translate any XLS files I get into CSVs.

OO was one of open source project I was going to take on outside my work, but it appears that they're looking for Carbon developers. Why are they still dicking around with the old stuff? I also found OO unusable on Linux.

Attributes that make it nearly identical to MS Office.

I'm curious about the Mac version and when it will be out. non-UB apps are holding me back from buying a new machine.

You may want to look at using Iconic, a simple program to replace the OpenOffice.org icons with a new set:<a class="user" href="http://brettisangry.com/Iconic/">http://brettisangry.com/Iconic/</a>One replacment icon set being developed currently is Akua [looks very mac os x] from:<a class="user" href="http://homepage.mac.com/punto_mac/projects/neo/downloads/Akua_Prerelease.dmg">http://homepage.mac.com/punto_mac/projects/neo/downloads/Akua_Prerelease.dmg</a>or replace them with a new set of Tango icons, also more like what one expects in aqua:<a class="user" href="http://au.geocities.com/aussie_149/index.html">http://au.geocities.com/aussie_149/index.html</a>
