nytimes.com — So, the government in Egypt decided a while back that it should kill all the pigs in the country. You know, to stop the dreaded Swine Flu. On the surface, this was an unbelievably stupid idea. But it turns out, it was even dumber than first thought -- because those pigs were eating Egypt's garbage. Now they've run out of places to put the stuff.

General welfare......things like health care and trash collection prevent massive disease and death. I'd say that is the governments responsibility since it is of the people, by the people, for the people. Republicans and Libertarians forget that.

The one main lesson and it's needed here in USA asap: Big government is BAD. Existing systems in general are too complex for simple manipulation. For the most part, LEAVE THINGS THE HELL ALONE!

well, i did mean what i said.having a problem with something isn't the same as not having it. Egypt has a democracy, technically, which means they have a problem with their "democracy" - even though you or I might not call it a democracy by our own standard, by theirs it is.

erhanaltay, why would the meat go to waste? Nearly every part of the animal was used, including the skin, meat, bones, organs, the head, brains, tongue, feet etc etc.Only thing different with this sacrifice thing is that you get to see it.

Halaal killing is so much more humane than factory farms. I grew up in a muslim background and am agnostic, but the way muslims deal with animals is relatively sacred and clean. The lambs that we eat are treated with respect.
