taxprof.typepad.com — Since 1984, only one major-party presidential candidate -- Bill Clinton in 1992 -- has refused to release the tax forms he sent to the IRS. as the 2008 election draws near, the only top-tier candidate who has committed to releasing his 1040 forms is Sen. Barack Obama.

Heck if I have to be finger printed, drug tested, background screened, credit checked, sent to the Dr. for a physical to run an exchange server, I see no reason why Govt. officials should not have to be completely transparent. If you work for the people, then there should be no secrets. How is it that these politicians raise so much money for campaigns. I wish the money raised could go to a charity, and then just have publically funded events in each state with all the candidates. This is one step back into the right direction.

"That is precisely the same thing as saying "anyone who doesn't want their library record checked out is probably a terrorist.""I don't think that applies in this case. These are elected government officials. Their lives are public.

It should probably be said that the only reason Obama did it is because he's under fire right now about his association with Chicago slum lord Tony Rezko (<a class="user" href="http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/355098,CST-NWS-obama24.article).">http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/355098,CST-NWS-obama24.article).</a> He's trying to prove to the world that he's not just another crooked Chicago politician. The problem is, when you come from a cesspool like Chicago, you usually wind up smelling pretty bad.

For the idiots out there who think that candidates shouldn't give out that information based on how we the common citizen don't have to, you are sadly mistaken. There is a big difference between the leader of the strongest country in the world and working at McDonalds. If anything, the Presidential candidacy should include the most intensive review system for every serious candidate.

Ron Paul is Digg's only hope for legalized Marijuana, that's the only reason he is supported here.

I think it would be good to see what the candidates are paying in taxes. There are so many loop holes for the rich to hide their money from being taxed; while at the same time some candidates keep pushing for more spending and more taxes. I'd like to see that they are paying their "share" of the pot while not just spending everyone else's.

I think the President is the one who should suffer for the better of the people so in this case it would be beneficial for total transparency into their life. He's interviewing for a job, yes, but his job is acting as the government. The line of thinking we use for determining unreasonable search and seizures is for citizens who may be potentially victimized by the government, not the government "victimizing" itself. There does need to be oversight in the government more-so than in peoples' personal lives.
