cnn.com — One person was killed and one person was wounded in a shooting on the Virginia Tech university campus Monday, The Associated Press reported, quoting a state government official. "A gunman is loose on campus. Stay in buildings until further notice. Stay away from all windows," read a warning from the university, located in Blacksburg, Virginia.

ckelley010: I don't think he was trying to justify it. He was pointing out that, in some cases, one person's emotional issues can destroy the lives of hundreds of other people. He wasn't saying it's ok for that to happen, he's saying that it does happen.

Kids as young at 16 can join the military (with parental permission). They are trained to kill, by any means possible (perferebly a gun). They do this so they can protect american's. Yet a 25 yr old soldier going to school can't "protect" his fellow american's (using a gun) when a situation like this happens. Yeah there's something messed up about that.

CNN said he had one 9mm and one .22. And the proceeded to hype up the evil 9mm semi auto... They almost described it as a WMD... sensationalism, its the new replacement for journalism!

"I agree that black market exist, but gun's price will increase exponentially (since it's so illegal and so rare)...Can the kids in high school or freshmen afford the gun and so many bullets?"Like I'm gonna buy a gun with my credit card. If I want an unregistered piece I'm either going to steal it or buy it with drug money. Guess what? Either way the black market pricing doesn't affect me. It's only going to affect the people who would normally be buying a gun legally if they could in the first place.

Let's not get carried away with the gun control debate. This issue is a distraction to what's really going on. The gunman obviously had major problems and he was a "quiet loner" who never talked to anyone. He's depicted in the media as this soulless individual, all the blame is pointed towards him. That may be true, he did commit the act, BUT surely, other forces came into play that made him snap. We are all capable of snapping. What the media fails to portray is what led the gunman to do this? Aside from the fact that he's a strange "loner," it seems as if we shy away from the deeper social structures that drive people over the edge. I'm not trying to justify his actions. My point is that this will keep happening if we continue to ignore the root of the problem. I believe the problem is in the minds of those who don't receive the help they need.
