pcauthority.com.au — A fifth of all messages received by corporate email servers are spam, according to research by Panda Software. The company said that its GateDefender Performa website had identified 21 per cent of emails as spam messages. Perhaps more worrying, Panda found that one in 20 emails were infected with malware.

At the office I receive approximately 1500 emails per day, and out of that only about 200 are real emails that I must respond to. The remainder (87 percent) is junk, spam, and malware. Sorting my emails in the morning can take up to 30 minutes alone, even with excellent filters. Mondays are so bad, that I have to start sorting my emails with remote VNC access to my computer on Sunday night, just to be able to have a normal Monday morning. (Can you believe that: they installed VNC just so I could work from home to deal with spam!)One interesting note: no matter how many times I reply to the "Vi@gr@" emails, to tell them that I don't need Vi@gr@ (but rather that what I really need is anti-Vi@gr@, or something that does the opposite) they never respond.

Only 20%?! Wow.

Yeah, I call bulls**t. Last hour -Total in: 780.Total passed (legit): 19.That'd be about 2%, and today was a "good day". On a day that we get "nailed"... the legit per hour will generally hover between 10 and 20, but the submissions will be in the thousands. 20% spam... my ass.

Also marked as innaccurate. Several people I know (myself included) who manage email servers see anywhere from 75% - 85% of the email coming in blocked as spam. The false positive rates are very miniscule. Perhaps some research should have been done before this article was written; seems to be popular oppinion that 20% is severely short of reality.

http://www.spamspotter.comHas some interesting articles dealing with the SPAM. The problem is when everyone gives their email address blindly to anyone without developing a trust relationship. There are many social engineering schemes that trick you into giving you're email address. Your email address should be treated just as valuable as your Social Security Number.

We currently block about 78% of incoming email as spam and we receive about 145,000 email per day.
