ecogeek.org — LED light bulb replacements are here! LEDison lamps are being used to replace 10 to 60w incandescent bulbs in commercial applications (like shopping malls). The LED lamps have ten times the service life of the incandescents they replace, and use only 1 watt!

Wow - LEDison's are made by Mule - which is based right here in my home city. I've gone by the place a zillion times and never knew what it was.

"@blapierre: go take a look at the compact LED flashlights you can buy at any hardware store, Wal-Mart, Target, etc. etc. They're frickin' _bright_, and run on 2 AA's instead of 4 D's."Yes, they've made regular flashlights obsolete. Notice they aren't particulary expensive. If these LED bulbs turn out to cost $50, they're a rip.Theoretically... you also could probably build your own?EDIT: Oops, Terc, I see you've come to the same conclusion already.
Imagine if the entire U.S. switched to these.
Maybe the whole world?

From what the others said, it's more like 20W.That is, these do 30 lumens (at 1W), and a 60W bulb is 600 lumens. That means you need to of these, 20W.

These have been around for years. LED's do not produce luminescence, so they are not good for general lighting. They end up being bright to the eyes but not alot of ambient light is through out and the room will look dark. They are great for things like accent lighting, decorative lighting, or signs.

Energy saving light is here. How long will it take to convert millions of people to reduce their electic bills, conserve energy, and basically just wise up? I replace all bulbs with the new energy saving types whenever an old bulb burns out. My house is about half converted.

@Sgagnon"Question is, what's the TOTAL energy taken by the light bulb, INCLUDING THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS ..."Right on, and the DISPOSAL process as well. Cradle-to-grave.
