My mother has a gas fire that soots up, and the merest speck of the stuff can cause black marks in the carpets. So all I'm saying is, NASA had better stick to lino in the space podules...
What I was driving at was the development of HEPA filters was driven by the Manhattan Project, which was lead by some of the greatest minds in various scientific disciplines at that time.
