Great democracy system here, I suggest a meaningful and perhaps a better alternative and get modded down for some reason. Yes, the software itself hasn't been updated since 2005, but the updates are nearly weekly. I just updated mine yesterday with a hosts file that was 5 days recent. An application this simple (which all it does is update a single file) does not need a new version very often.
This huge hosts file slowed my win 2k box down to molasses... I'd like to use the hosts file but not at the expense of a slow computer. Anyone else experience this?
Well I had the same experience where the 1.5MB Host file hosed my machine.. well kind of. My machine is part of a domain and because the 1.5MB has to be read by the DNS Client service when you first log in it takes about 5 minutes for the entire service to complete the read and load it into cache. However, if you aren't part of a domain, then you don't even have to run the DNS Client service because it is used to find DC on your network. So, yes it did SLOW down my system but only during the initial read of the file. If you have AV software installed... it takes much longer. I had McAfee Corp 8.0 and along with the DNS Client Service and the the shstat.exe used by McAfee would drop my machine for 10-15 minutes.
REASON WHY HOSTS FILE SLOWS DOWN BROWSING:every address i go to it has to scan the entire hosts file first to make sure that address is not in the hosts file, the longer the hosts file the longer it takes to scan the hosts file looking for every single address i try to go to!
Except it cripples digg.com. Have you updated it lately? Made my digg page look like it was from 1998 taking away all the ajax and design elements. I had to uninstall that crap. For other sites it was good, but had to get rid of it for messing up digg.

You don't know what you're talking about. Try it both ways before you open your mouth next time. I promise, there is a big difference.

I like Nuke Anything Enhanced ( https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/951/ ) too, the problem with using it exclusively though is that it takes your action to 'block' the ad. A solution like the one linked in this article is that it cuts out a huge part of ads automatically.

Whatev, Mr Foos - I think Seumas' comment is right on the money.

Slashdot has it right - the subscriptions are dirt cheap ($5 for 1000 page views I think?). And you can customize your level of ad viewing.

... in firefox, type "about:config" (without quotes)... scroll down and find "browser.xul.error_pages.enabled" and set it to false.
