thinkprogress.org — During a debate on MSNBC’s Hardball this evening, right-wing radio host Robert “Buzz” Patterson, a retired colonel, gratuitously attacked Iraq war veteran Jon Soltz, the chairman of VoteVets.org, exclaiming “I am so happy you’re not serving in Iraq right now, stabbing your fellow men and women in uniform like you do back in the states"

You should read the ISG report which says that Saddam made up with Al Qaeda back in the 90s, in order to go after their common enemies, ie the US. That's why all the Al Qaeda camps were in the north where they were fighting the Kurds at Saddams behest. But I bet you blanked that all out of your head. Remember Zarqawi?

Yeah, I remember Zarqawi, but you need to go further than O'Reilly to get to the truth. Ansar al-Islam is CLAIMED to have been tied to Al Quaida and CLAIMED to have been tied to Saddam (thereby linking the two and providing one justification for the invasion), but those ties are at best, questionable, and at worst, unbelieveable. Mullah Krekar, the leader of the group, was interviewed by Johnathon Miller pre-war: "Krekar denies links with al-Qaeda and says he is Saddam's his sworn enemy. He scoffs at the idea that his trusted friend, the Iraqi Arab Abu Wa'il, is a spy. He denies any links with international terrorism and said he'd never met al-Zarqawi."Iraqi intelligence documents and testimony by a captured Iraqi Intelligence officer indicated that the group had been infiltrated (see Abu Wa'il above) and that Saddam was using the link to control the group and direct their attacks against the PKU. This implies that he wasn't in bed with them, he was using them for a purpose.Colin Powell said it best on his Barbera Walters interview:"There were some people in the intelligence community who knew at that time that some of these sources were not good, and shouldn't be relied upon, and they didn't speak up. That devastated me." When asked specifically about a Saddam/al-Qaeda connection, Powell responded, "I have never seen a connection. … I can't think otherwise because I'd never seen evidence to suggest there was one."The 2004 CIA report indicated the same, as did the 2005 Senate Report on Pre-War Intelligence: "Postwar information indicates that Saddam Hussein attempted, unsuccessfully, to locate and capture al-Zarqawi and that the regime did not have a relationship with, harbor, or turn a blind eye toward Zarqawi." George Tenet's autobiography indicated "the intelligence did not show any Iraqi authority, direction, or control over any of the many specific terrorist acts carried out by al-Qa'ida." even though at the time he was claimed publicly to have said that Zarqawi received medical treatment in Baghdad (a key point of Powell's speech to the UN). In his autobiography, Tenet stated that he was furious that the memo ostensibly linking Zarqawi, Al Quaida and Saddam made it to the President's desk and felt this was a blow to his credibility as the normal procedure was for him to have signed off on all documents reaching the President.I could go on, but you'll just believe what you want to believe.

How can you serve in the military and be a "chickenhawk?"Saddam wasn't linked to al Qaeda? Could have fooled the members of al Qaeda and Saddam's Baath regime who said otherwise...www.regimeofterror.com
