The HTC interface is not opensource. I've tried the Hero build on my G1 and I can tell you that for sure.

Depends what you mean by special branded or locked down, there's 3 official branches of android, the old 1.0 branch, the current 1.5 (cupcake) branch and the future 2.0 (donut) branch. I'm sure the hero runs 1.5 with custom interface and a few of HTC's own apps. There's also lots of unofficial builds with various development features or features not available in certain countries which you can install .

I hope if I buy the Hero (or one of those Samsung devices) I'll be able to install a "vanilla" 2.0, instead of one specially made for HTC etc. I'm like the choice of all the different builds though, even if they are grey market in a sense.
