I do think that there will be small gain in linux market share, commensurate with previous years.

Every year is the year. Linux has been successful on the Desktop for at least 5 years now, if you consider double-digit growth 'success' (which you should).The only reason we keep seeing these aggravating articles claiming "this is the year!" is because bloggers have figured out that it's an easy way to score a few extra viewers.
