It wouldn't hurt to do community service or volunteer at all. Making it a requirement, or requiring taxpayers to pay students $40/hour to do that work, is an entirely different issue.
its not the 50 hours, its the mandatory nature of the 50 hours.and if they get away with 50 hours then it will be 1 summer non-military; then 6 months boot camp, and then 2 years. government programs grow-Social security started at 1%, and the cards were handed out at the local firehouse when you went to work. Now its assigned at birth.it's the fact that it's forced and required.50 hours in middle school = 150 hours total100 hours in high school = 400 hours total100 hours in college = 200 hours (community college) 400 hours (bachelors), 500-600 hours (Masters), and 700-1000 hours (PhD).That's insane--while middle and high schoolers do have spare time, forcing 100 hours, per year, in a regular college? Ridiculous; college students are busy enough, as is, and they often work during the summer to help pay for the expenses.Couple this with the other bill mentioned here, and you have double-disaster...and remember that 2 years military service is without college deferment. There's also a 3rd bill that would require you to attend 3 months training for your city or State.Let's see, 2 years military service, 3 months training, and 750-1550 hours total community service? Sounds like Fascism mixed with Communism....oh boy...
Community service is something done VOLUNTARILY out of love and passion for the community, not love and passion for the government. It betters the person and the community if done by choice, not by force or coercion. Government is there to work FOR us--not to pay our mortgage, not to help us find a job, not to regulate the economy, but to PRESERVE OUR LIBERTY AND FREEDOM.We are NOT debating whether community service should be done at all. Of course it something needed in every community, which is why it is VOLUNTARY. We are debating the involvement of the FEDERAL Government (not local, not state) rubber-stamping this "requirement to serve" under an Obama administration.

<a class="user" href="http://www.politicallore.com/images/change.jpg">http://www.politicallore.com/images/change.jpg</a>There's nothing "voluntary" about it. Here's a part of the quote from the graphic copy:"Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to REQUIRE 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school abd 100 hours of community service in college every year."Here's the full quote from another source: ( <a class="user" href="http://americandigest.org/index.php">http://americandigest.org/index.php</a> )"The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation’s challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps. Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to *require* 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start."There are other links to exactly the same quote, such as the following:<a class="user" href="http://209.85.173.104/search?q=cache:f76pOsFX0qgJ:volokh.com/posts/1219902544.shtml+Obama+will+call+on+citizens+of+all+ages+to+serve+America,+by+developing+a+plan+to+require+50+hours+of+community+service+in+middle+school+and+high+school+and+100+hours+of+community+service+in+college+every+yea&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=2&gl=us">http://209.85.173.104/search?q=cache:f76pOsFX0qgJ: ...</a>"Require" does not mean "volunteer." Obama did mean for it to be MANDATORY, and now he's changing his tune and trying to erase any record that he ever said it. The latest revision of the Great One's wording should surprise no one. He's been changing his story throughout his campaign, including his pledge to accept public financing and limit his spending to that amount. The Great Obamamessiah should really be known as the Great Prevaricator.
