Gitmo must be shut down if the US is to regain a semblance or respectability in the eyes of the world. Torture can in no way be defended by any nation purporting to defend human rights, individual freedoms and the legal right to a fair trial.
I don't. I know 100% of the people we pick up and send to Guantanamo are not all enemy combatants. However, that doesn't change the fact that at least SOME of them ARE guys who were attacking our troops. My question specifically addresses that - how do we handle them? And look it up - it's well documented that some of those released from that facility went on to attack the US again.
If the new Obama administration is to gain any respect internationally it must publicly condemn torture and take every possible measure to ensure that no US citizens or military personnel are in the business of torturing people. There should be an end to the weasel words and excuses for torture which became familiar under the Bush administration. Prisoners at Guantanamo should either be treated as prisoners of war, in which case they should be held in accordance with the Geneva conventions, or they should be treated as criminals and put on trial if any evidence exists of wrongdoing, with proper legal procedures in place. There should be no legal black holes or torture chambers.
I guess this crazy notion may come from reading the first fifteen words of the Constitution...."We the People of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union", which sets the precedent for the many thousands of words that follow.
They want us there. Especially Japan and South Korea, since our military promotes stability, yes stability, to the region. Considering that they have two adversaries (China and more importantly North Korea) near them who would not be afraid to attack the relatively weak countries, while our military promotes a "deturance" (sp?) if you will

If you're an American and you're not ashamed of what they were doing at Guantanamo, you haven't seen this movie:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0481536/
