macworld.com — A simple script hack from Macworld that you can do yourself in less than a minute. "Is there a way to have QuickTime 7 play in full screen without paying for the pro version? Sure. Launch Script Editor and enter this..." This works great on my Macbook Pro.

Although not free and it doesn't have the same editting features as Quicktime Pro another option is TransLucy. I use this app all the time while working. it allows you to float a movie on top, any size (including full screen) and vary the translucency. The key difference between TransLucy and using WindowShadeX (which I use for other things) is that you can use the screen underneath a translucent movie. I routinely use it to watch cartoons while I work on a document or spreadsheet.TransLucy uses QuickTime to render the video so unfortuantely it's not as great for playback as VLC (which seems to solve everything). I do use VLC occassionally but for anything that VLC can play that QuickTime can't - I just convert it with VisualHub. VisualHub and TransLucy are both apps that are well worth the money and are some of the first apps I install on a new Mac.

It works great, does what it says. It does however cause problems when I'm using two monitors. I've got my macbook pro hooked up to an external monitor and when I run the full screen script the quicktime window moves to the laptop screen and maximizes regardless of it's location when I ran the script. It's a little annoying, because I want to be able to play 1080 HD movies( trailers at the moment) on my external monitor and quicktime keeps moving over to my (much) smaller laptop screen. The script does work quite nicely though.
