dekstop.de — After finally updating to 10.4.3 today I found that Dashboard requests a URL from Apple's server with only one word in the document's body: "bert". I found no real information on this on the web, so I documented my findings and hope for some feedback from others. First evaluation: nothing to worry about, but curious nevertheless.

Dashboard doesn't try to connect to anything. It's the widgets that you are using. I killed everything in Little Snitch and then opened the Dashboard - the one widget which requested info from an Apple URL was the weather widget (I've only got about 3 turned on.) Check your widgets to see which ones are enabled and then work backwards from there to determine what is downloading this doc. If you don't want widgets to connect to the internet, disable them. Everytime that you open the dash with that widget enabled, it's probably going to fetch the document that you're talking about.Doesn't really fit the definition of "phoning home."

Proof positive that people need skills regardless of the OS.Netstat will tell you what your computer is talking to and things like messenger are turned off by anyone with knowledge after a new build. And Apple or Microsoft fanboys can f**koff.

"Mac users are divided equally between elitist bastards and f**king morons"Commenters here are divided equally between elitist bastards and elitist teens who have no respect for the authority of the "check spelling" button. The difference here is that I'm recognizing that I'm one of the elitist bastards.
