Did you even read that article you linked? The hot spot of the MBP, which I own and use as my primary machine btw, is in the upper left quarter. That quarter is significantly hotter than the Dell. The rest of the machine doesn't matter if a quarter of it is too hot to touch, you cant put it on your lap.Oh, and how about we compare the MBP to a similarly configured Thinkpad, cause I own a couple of those and they never get above warm.
I have an appointment at an Apple store in an hour. The girl I talked to there had no clue. She said for me to bring it in to show them the problem. I am not looking forward having to argue that my MacBook Pro whines in the middle of an always packed Apple Store. If you have a problem with your computer, they need to repair it. Even though their records says you shouldn't have a problem. You spend the money with Apple, it is under 1 year warrenty, it's their problem to fix it. I don't get why you are afraid you will never see your computer again? I backed mine up to be sure I had my stuff, and if they give me a new one.. Crap. But nothing I can do about it. This is my second on anyway.. Last time I had problems with some keys on my keyboard that harder to press than others.Apple should be happy they have such loyal customers...
I doubt any MBP owner has had to pay for any repairs related to the whine issue. I'm not letting Apple off the hook but I'm just saying the situation is not that bad.
I was one of those 1st generation buyers - not by choice, but by necessity. When I first cranked up the MBP, I noticed that it was a bit loud. I thought that is just how it was. Then I had an "issue" with the display. I thought it was the screen, but the genius in the Apple Store told me it was a display. It went off to the depot in Texas and sat there waiting for a part for two weeks. When the part arrived, the AppleCare folks told me that it was going to be repaired that day and shipped the next day. Suddenly, it was back in the queue for another part. The tech guy slipped and told me that it now needed a new motherboard. About a week later I got it back and the noise was gone. Oh, and then three days later the battery started to bulge and lose its charge. They sent me a new one the next day. So, now I have the same MBP that you 2nd generations buyers have, only I helped build it.
Amazing. I just bought a black 2.16GHZ Core 2 Duo MacBook and it has the processor whine. You'd think that none of the laptops would have this problem now. I'm going to call Apple support tomorrow and ask them about it.
