If people are interested in making indie movies and such, a site I like to frequent is indymogul.comIt has an odd sense of humor, which some may find distracting or childish, but has some pretty good tips, especially with blood effects and such
As a film student, I have seen countless hours of crappy amateur films. I can therefore say with 100% certainty that when someone makes a film and doesn't take the time to make it look good, they haven't spent much time on the story or editing, either. Movies are about the whole experience. If one part sucks, it's really hard to overlook.

There's also a reason pro level stabilizers cost what they do. It's more then $15 worth of PVC and a guy who thinks he's the next Garrett Brown.
