Eaglefire: Also, computer cases are guarded against magnets. You would have to get very close to disrupt a hard drive with one.-i read somewhere that if a magnet is strong enough to disrupt a hdd, it would be strong enough to suck iron out of your blood.Thank you Thundercat1971. "aerogel doesn't dissipate heat, it insulates against it......." INSULATE.
For all you freaks that want to eat it here is a gel you can eat, SEAgel is a material similar to organic aerogel, made of agar, with a taste and consistency similar to rice cakes. YUMM. No really if it tastes like a rice cake then its yuck. It is among the least dense solids known; in fact, SEAgel has a density that is approximately equal to that of air. It is one of the lightest solids known, rivaling Aerogel. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SEAgel
Aerogel is not indestructable. If you throw it in the air, it will break when it hits the ground. If you squish it in the wrong direction with your fingers, it can shatter. If you make a hat out of it, the hat will splinter as soon as you press it down on your head.Static electricity can snap it easier than you can crack a toothpick. That said, when you buy it (if you do), wear anti-static gloves. Do not apply unequal pressure to it. Do not use it around food. =) Yes, it's just like Happy Fun Ball.
" " Due to its microstructure, Aerogel is a powerful desiccant, rapidly absorbing any moisture in your fingertips when held. This usually leaves some dry spots on the skin that disappear in a short time."it absorbs moisture. therefore, no aerogel cars.sorry to crush all your dreams. >:}" You could always wrap in saran wrap. or use a giant ziplock bag.
You idiots learn to do a little research. Aerogell can be chemicaly traeted to repell water and can even be machined using water jets once you have done so. Thus you are back to having a waterproof aerogel car thats as strong as styrafoam.
why would this prevent usage as a car?just because the material itself absorbes moisture does not mean that you can't put a coating or other layer around it to keep the moisture out. it wouldn't be a 100% aerogel car, but it could be used for certain components. This is of course after further advances in the material come along to produce at lower prices, etc...

it explodes into silica powder if you squeeze it between your fingers. imagine if gold or diamonds did that.
