linuxquestions.org— This BIOS is ONLY for use with Windows Vista. Please do not install this BIOS for use with Windows XP, or other Windows versions. and who cares about something known as Linux

I mean, here in one corner you have Apple who won't allow it's OS to run on anything other than its own hardware. Then you have VistaLand, where you can install it onto whatever hardware is capable of running it, even it's competitors. It's not exactly Apple's fault but... wait, yes it is.
@Hickeroar (#6089786)It seems most people here didn't get it. I was about to type in "Blatant sarcasm?" then I figured I'd let google do the work and highlight his spelling mistake at the same time. It was supposed to be clever. In other words: the mistake was intentional.
I happen to agree with you; but Windows versions prior to Server 2003 didn't support EFI, so you know what'll happen when a major PC manufacturer starts shipping EFI PCs, don't you?Yup.Front page: "OMG OMG Brand X PC's crippled to work ONLY with Vista!!!1!!! [2000 diggs]"
Talk about abusing monopoly........... I won't be getting a toshiba laptop then... That's a shame cause they have good graphics cards.. Oh well, their loss not mine
The exact same thing happened to me just last week on my Toshiba Satellite A135. I plugged in my camera via the USB port. The laptop froze, overheated, and now prompts me for a bios password. I've tried all of the default passwords to no avail, and since I don't want to void the warranty, I have to go get it fixed...which involves either driving two hours (don't have a car at college, not gonna happen), or mailing it to my parents at home so they can have it fixed 2 miles from our house. Anyway, he's not making up this problem.
In the oringal post on LinuxQuestions.org, the poster "chessonly" cited an 2003 article from Networkcomputing.com by writer Steven J. Schuchart as evidence of a Phoenix/Microsoft relationship. However, if you read this blogged rebuttal, Schuchart clearly states chessonly is wrong. Schuchart says:"From this single short article and a BIOS text warning, chessonly has come to the conclusion that it must be a conspiracy between Microsoft and Phoenix that is preventing him from accessing his laptop. That conclusion is a logical leap at best and a flat-out guess at worst. There is no evidence other than chessonly's post and one other on a different site (that I frankly think he wrote as well) to support this."You can read the rest of Steven's comments here.
Umm, actually this is true. Phoenix has something called TrustedCore that can verify an operating system. I gather that it is geared toward businesses who don't want their workers changing the operating systems on their computers. Here is a link to the site:http://www.phoenix.com/en/Products/Browse+by+Produ ...I'm not sure exactly 'how' it would lock you out, and I seriously doubt that it is on 'all' Toshiba laptops as mine is a year old and I dual-boot quite well with Linux, and my fiancee's Toshiba does as well... Also, Toshiba also has a linux support page for it's laptops and some of it's machines are actually certified for use with Ubuntu Linux. True, this person my not be a computer expert, and he or she may have locked themself out of their system, but the story about the BIOS is correct, and I appreciate the heads-up. I dugg this story for that.

I'm beginning to think anyone who wishes to post an article on Digg should be required to pass a basic journalism aptitude test of headline and summary writinghttp://ww.youtubeline.com
