techcrunch.com — Steve Jobs might be better served here to take his own advice and think different. Because, as he has so elegantly demonstrated with the iPhone, these devices are finally becoming little computers. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that consumers will expect them to act like computers. They will want to modify them to their exact, specifications.

I'm glad this came from a source that already has a huge audience. Maybe Jobs will wake up on this issue before it's too late.

iPod Touches are constantly sold out in Apple Stores, yet iPhones are also selling very, very well. One isn't eating into the other -- both are selling like crazy to their respective markets.

Why do people keep sending "open letters" and "notes" to Apple giving business advice as if they're some sort of marketing guru?

I think you need to get over yourselves. The iPhone is a device intended to be used as utility, intended by its designers. I take my hat off to Apple and Co for sticking it out for usability, innovation, and raising the bar on mobile devices - period. While doing so, they are laying down the rules to do this in a protected and controllable environment. You've been warned not to mess with this device, now all the hackers are up in arms for being spanked by an upgrade. Apple provides a great experience for the masses that do not want to hack, unlock, crack etc. I appreciate the fact that I can switch on all things Apple. It works. It is better designed, and it is user friendly (not necessarily hacker friendly). Also, going up against the demi-gods of industry (Music and Telco) is not everyone's cup of tea. I think Apple is doing a balancing act not because it chooses, but because it has to, to be allowed in the sandbox for a play. So, suck it up. Enjoy what it has to offer, or get a Nokia and suffer the fate of having to deal with buggy, unfinished software (for years now)... P.S. If you are upset about Apple making money, then get over that too. Buy some shares!!Go Apple!

Your thinking isn't quite right... you think that the buying public is a geek like you. They're not. They don't know what release 1.1.1 is - and will keep buying the phone. And probably not even load Apps - let alone try to unlock it.

Well, as Tech Crunch said "That is why PC's took over the world" History tends to repeat itself. Apple had everything in the 80's to become today's Microsoft but Steve Jobs miserably dropped the ball with his stubbornness. Microsoft copied what he was doing and took it to a whole new level. Do not be surprised if Microsoft comes up with an iphone equivalent shortly with more functionality and open to the world's creativity to develop applications for.

All criticism, no suggestions...what would you have me do? Avid runs on PC's too.
