flickr.com — The combination of clear skies, snowy foreground and highly active Aurora is a rare thing in Iceland but it makes a great shot. Taken on Mosfellsheiði, between Reykjavík and Þingvellir. (Photo: "The Observer" by Orvar Atli Porgeirsson)

Gonna be a crappy year for the Northern Lights, according to scientists that are predicting lower then normal solar activity for the next 6 months. Bad news for the hotels up in Fairbanks, as half their winter income comes from all the asians who head that way between December and March to make whoopie, as it's supposed to be a good omen if they conceive a child under the Aurora Borealis.

Even if this was HDR I think that it was used properly to create a nice dynamic range and show the landscape while correctly exposing the sky.

Look at the artist's other work. It looks a lot like HDR to me - but I could be wrong. And I agree that long exposures can create saturation in the stars like that, but I was mainly talking about the hues in the sky.
