huffingtonpost.com — In North Carolina, a straight-party vote counter-intuitively does not include a vote for president. Voters must make a separate mark under the Presidential Contest box...Lawrence Norden, an attorney at the Brennan Center for Justice, said "I believe as many as 100,000 votes for president could be lost this time around", in NC.

While I really worry about this kind of thing, as someone who has lived in NC since 1998, I have been informed by workers in every election that a straight party vote does NOT include the presidential choices. I sure hope that workers are pointing that out in every voting location! I NEVER use the straight party choice, though, it just seems lazy to me, and I like to check out exactly who I'm voting for!

Please advise people to do the OBAMA STRAIGHT FLIP. 1) vote OBAMA for president2) vote STRAIGHT party ticket 3) FLIP the ballot over and vote for non-partisan judges on backThis has always been a problem in NC. There are ALWAYS tens of thousands of undervotes for President. This year (with huge influx of first-time voters, Obama will probably lose about 100,000 potential votes b/c of this. Voter education is the key at this point. Please educate your friends and families. Also, sign up to volunteer on election day or before and remind voters outside polling places about the ballot design. I did this in 2004 and I'm sure I saved at least 100 votes from being lost for Kerry. That was ONE precinct in a rural county.

Even if you already voted in NC, get out there on the 4th and make sure everyone know about this.

I voted early in NC and had no problems. The poll worker explained it to me right away and reminded me before I left to fill out my ballot. There are large bold letters indicating you must fill out the president first. The presidential section is also clearly separated from everything else. This isn't really that big of an issue. I would go as far as to say it would confuse more Republicans than Democrats for demographic reasons.
