Wow. A game that is thousands of years old. Which teaches logical, strategic thinking has been butchered for morons by adding directions. It's a battle game. Directing a field of action with a heirarchical structure. You remove the structure behind the game you end up with draughts (checkers for the colonists). Would battleships be a better game if you removed the ships ? Would monopoly be better if you took away the money ? Would Cluedo (clue, again for the Americans) be better for not having an actual murderer or victim. ?I think you get my point that this is by far the worst thing you can do to this game. By removing the symbolism behind the game you remove it's essense. It's patriotism if you will where every piece on the board is available to sacrifice for the sake of the king and the greater victory over the enemy,.
It's strange to call the traditional design of a chess set "prejudice." As other commenters have noticed, the historic meaning is part of the charm.I remember being a beginner and really appreciating having a chess set that displayed, on each piece, arrows for how it moved. An example of this type is the "pavilion chess teacher" as seen on http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000JBMZ/ . One must admit, the nontraditional design shown in the article is much cleaner-looking but less helpful.

Prejudice? against people that look like horses, castles and graduated concave pyramids with balls on top? Those poor people.
