electronista.com — Nokia this morning launched a new class of smartphone as its flagship. The promised N900 is a crossover between smartphones and Nokia's Internet tablets, and makes its biggest break in its change of operating system: although still a phone, the handset runs Nokia's latest Linux variant, not Symbian: this gives it multitasking iPhones can't have.

I like my Nokia phones. The ones I have are not high tech, but their build quality is top notch. Overall I had only four cell phones: One from SonyEricson, one from Samsung and two from Nokia. Both the SE and the Samsung one have bitten the dust pretty soon. They survived only about one year. My first Nokia phone -- considered high tech in 2003 -- died just recently, after six years (!!) of constant abuse by me. My "new" Nokia phone is a cheap used one. It's by no means a fancy pants phone. It has a black and white display, doesn't even feature infra red, let alone Bluetooth or WLAN. It's already four years old and it works like a charm. My friends told be stories about breaking Motorola phones, failing fancy SE CyberShot phones, constantly crashing Siemens/BenQ phones etc.Nokia does not have a great reputation when it comes to usability, but I don't care. I prefer a working Nokia phone over any "soooo easy to use alternative with much bling" phone that starts failing after a few months. When I buy a new phone, it will be a Nokia one. The day may come very soon. My MP3 player starts failing, my Minolta digicam is also now dead. A new Nokia phone my server as gread all-in-one solution -- maybe this N900.

IPhone doesn't "rule" the high end. In the second quarter of 2009 Nokia sold 18 million smartphones and had a marketshare of 45% while Apple sold 5 million IPhones. Apple has gained marketshare fast I give you that, but rule the high end..

If I'm listening to an MLB ballgame using the MLB app and I get an email I have to stop listening to the game to view it. This sucks.

lol even s60 can multitask.but this brings multiple desktops a feature i love

@alecksJoe Schmoe doesn't need to know what 'multitasking' is, he just wants to be able to have his email application open while he browses the web and listens to music. That's a very simple concept which doesn't need technical knowledge of how it is achieved. And Apple are arseholes for not allowing it, and yes, it means their product is neutered.

*** The main reason iphone don't enable multitasking by default is related to its 128 physical RAM size. To do multi-tasking like our pc does one would need more than that to avoid potential problem.you can find more details about it at http://www.roughlydrafted.com/2008/03/13/iphone-20 ...

This tendency for the company to force behavior is one of strongest reasons the iPhone tops consumer-reports-appreciation-rating-bulls**t stuff.

You forgot to mention e17. If there's anything that should be mentioned when speaking of linux desktop beautification, it's e17. Not only does it take fewer system resources than XFCE4 (I believe it's only slightly more resource intensive than fluxbox), it's more beautiful than KDE (and, in my opinion, more useful). The linux desktop, in my opinion, has been ahead of its competitors for the past five years or so - if you could get used to it. Most linux distros are still very much unix-like (a good thing), which takes some getting used to (but is worth it in the end). Ubuntu is the main exception.Linux is becoming more and more user-friendly, with many distros coming with links to IRC support rooms right on the desktop and extensive help tools. Of those that I've convinced to try it, only one has gone back to Windows.

iPhone has been a great phone for years but when i go down to my mates and watch full length movies or episodes on my n900 with tv out cable they wish there phone was like Mine...Apple based operating has too many restrictions...no bluetooth file sharing, crappy codecs for movies NO JAVA WOW! if u want to visit a website download an app cuz when it comes to computer based internt not mobile app versions u cant compare the two..6 axis 5mega pixel camera 36 gig standard..better battery life + nokia is still and has been the biggest mobile phone seller for many years now..Cant wait for the N9 , nokia n900 has nothing to stop you
