vanityfair.com — Joseph Stiglitz warns: a tax code that has become hideously biased in favor of the rich; a national debt increased 70 percent; a record $850 billion trade deficit; record oil prices; weak dollar. In addition, the US has not been educating enough engineers and scientists, nor investing in the kinds of basic research we need to lead in the 21st cent.

Looking at all the events mentioned in the article, how many people here think the Democrats would have handled them better? You know that if we had a Democratic president they would have handled it and not let them get to the point we're at today. I know that at the end of the day there (used to be) little difference between the two parties. Unfortunately, the Republicans had a lovefest with George Bush and got suckered into the "question your patriotism" bulls**t, resulting in some of the most partisan votes in Congress I've ever seen. The Republicans in congress got duped by GW and Karl Rove and by not voting for their constituents. The result is this bag of s**t we see today.

@n1eb. That is a lie. You are either a liar or a sucker. The problem is much more complicated than that and wasnt magically 100% caused by a Democrats in the 90s. Blaming this whole mess on Clinton shows a complete lack of spine. In power all this time and not willing to take one ounce of responisibilty. Character. You aint got it.

And we are about to fall for another bait and switch, as we vote for Obama and get more of the same. Same war, until we ship off to Africa for another. Same federal reserve, printing up that stuff that we need to get by today so our kids can pay for tomorrow.Tax cuts for the wealthy keeps those wealthy investing in America. What we desperately need are government cuts for everybody. It is absolutely amazing just how much government we can do without.

This was a great article but my favorite Vanity Fair writer is definitely James Wolcott!

This is the first article in 5 pages on digg that doesn't have mccain or obama in its title. Its as if everyone forgot that there's still 4 months of Bush in the whitehouse, not to mention that congress still has more power than the president and is where people are truely represented.

What about all the college bound idiots who want to be lawyers? One of my friends kids actually told me he wanted to be a lawyer so he "could make the big bucks and have the nice toys." I s**t thee not. Engineers and scientists make solutions, lawyers make paper.

I believe there is a Japanese proverb "Fix the problem, not the blame." Also the problem of a lack of engineers and scientists has been going on for quite some time. I remember an article in Design Engineering in 96 talking about the engineer shortage. Long before Bush got in Office, so that aspect of the argument is more wishful thinking than analysis. Using selective memory to look back is about as helpful as a rubber crutch.
