eweek.com — "Linus Torvalds is getting tough with developers who can't hit deadlines. Before now, if developers were contributing to the Linux kernel, were late getting the code in, it wasn't a big deal. Chances were it would be squeezed in anyway. That was then. This is now."

"Red Hat and Novell likely hire the largest number of programmers to work on a variety of Linux programs."Close, but actuall IBM, HP, and Fujitsu have vast armies hacking at core Linux functionality. And, believe it or not, the Wall Street firms have hundreds of developers doing some intense things to the Linux kernel file structures, math routines, compilers, etc. If anything, the guys at Red Hat and Novell are just arbitrators among these huge development teams. And to those who think that Linux hackers do it in their spare time, you're sorely mistaken. There are many companies that pa fulltime for such open source development./former Red Hatter.

"It makes it all the more amazing that it continues to suck so bad."Looks like we have yet another person who can't bring themselves to accept that they have to *shock* learn stuff when they move to Linux.

Doing something for free isn't a reason to be late. As the number of people who work on it grows the less people can be late on it. Since it can affect more people’s free time working on their part. It's like any business and one thing a lot of Open Source people for get. Linux is like a small business growing into a medium business. Things you got away with when you were in a small group don’t work in a bigger group. The main thing is how then handle the growth.
