gamasutra.com — The total domination of games for Nintendo formats during Japan?s ?Golden Week? series of public holidays has reached ever higher levels, with the top 21 best selling games all being for either the DS or the Wii and all but six of those published by Nintendo themselves.

Sorry if there was a reply already...no, Wii Sports is not bundled in Japan.

anamanaman: other than your suggestion that software sells systems -- which I agree with -- none of your evidence makes any sense. Let me go point by point. First, the reason why first part titles have done so well on the Wii is that the first party titles are GOOD. Wii sports, Zelda, and Super Paper Mario aren't just three of the most popular titles on the system, they're also three of the most critically acclaimed. What first party titles does the PS3 even have? Seriously, I don't know. Does Genji count? I think it does, and it got mediocre-to-bad reviews. In short -- the top 3rd party titles go to systems with a high installed user base. That's why the PS2 did so well with third party titles, and the Gamecube did not. There's a reason why several studios (most notably EA and Capcom) have already pulled money out of PS3 development and put it IN to Wii development: because the Wii has a 2:1 installed user base that's proportionately growing, not shrinking. Second, you can pretty much stop with the "Hardcore gamers will buy more games and the Wii won't sell software" slogan, because that's already showing signs of being untrue. I don't argue with the logic -- it makes some intuitive sense, I agree. But if you check vgchartz.com, MORE Wii software has been sold per system, not LESS, compared to the PS3. In other words: so far, every Wii owner has bought more games, on average, than a PS3 owner. In short, regardless of intuition, the evidence shows that your logic is wrong. Third and last, I love how you point out Halo 3, MGS and the like, while not mentioning Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, and Super Smash Brothers Brawl. Are you seriously suggesting that the games you mentioned will sell systems, but the three I did will not?

Anamanaman: You've basically layed out my point for me. The 360, the PS2 before it, and PS1 before that all got the 3rd party games for one reason: they had the most systems sold. Why make games for a less popular system when you can make it for a more popular one and sell 2, 3 or 4 times the number of games simply because you've reached so many more people? The 360 will certainly get a good number of games, but the Wii is quickly surpassing it worldwide in systems sold, and it's already at a 2:1 advantage over the PS3.The reason why the Wii did not have (and does not have for the next 6 months) any enormous 3rd party publications is because no one expected it to do very well. It's doing extremely well, so developmental support HAS shifted over (Again, both EA and Capcom have explicitly stated that they're ramping up production for Wii now, precisely because of the popularity)Put succinctly: popular systems get more titles, because you can sell more games if the system has 2 or 3 times the installed user base. Right now, that systems is the Xbox360. That may change, and is certainly on trajectory to do so in the next 6 months. It CERTAINLY suggests the PS3 is in trouble, because it's horribly lagging behind the other two. I'm not suggesting the PS3 or particularly the 360 won't be getting any games at all: I'm just saying that the Wii will get games precisely BECAUSE it is so popular. Nintendo hasn't seen strong 3rd party support for some time now -- not because nobody likes Nintendo, but because their systems had been less popular for almost ten years (by the end of the life cycle, PS2 had outsold the Gamecube almost 5:1). If that changes -- and it is changing right now, as we speak -- then the third party titles start showing up.

The DS generates so much revenue because it provides games for casual, and more serious gamers. The Wii is doing the same, and I doubt it will fade away this holiday season. With games like Wii Health Pack, and Wii music for casual gamers. There's also those oh-so-popular music games coming to Wii like DDR, and Guitar Hero III. Granted those are also on other systems but why would someone buy another system if they don't have one, if they could get it for the cheaper Wii. I never denied 3rd party support is crucial but a consoles popularity, and attachment rate of games really helps in the process of what console to develop for (I suppose). As for me believing Nintendo PR as fact. I would not say I did that. Nintendo has said that Metroid Prime 3, SSBB, and Super Mario Galaxy, among others such as Batalion Wars, Day of Crisis, etc would be out this year to their stock holders. I wouldn't be surprised at all if that changed, honestly though I'd be happy if two of those big three (metroid, brawl, galaxy) came out this year. I also acknowledged Nintendo's shady business practices in earlier times.

for games that may be true, but the psp can also surf the web, play mp3s and videos, it supports RSS podcast subscriptions, and i've installed a pdf reader on mine to read ebooks. so while i've been a little disappointed in the video game selection for the psp (emulators do make up for this though), i still much prefer it over a DS. but then again, i'm not really a gamer--i quit playing computer games a long time ago and only started picking up gaming again because i got a PSP for my birthday.i think both devices have their strengths, but for someone who's not a dedicated gamer, the PSP might be more useful as a general portable entertainment device. for hardcore gamers though, the DS definitely seems much more enticing.

I still don't see where the Wii is in competition with the 360 or the PS3. Nintendo is doing all parties a favor by creating more casual gamers. Casual gamers often become hard core gamers. My Wii is a great novelty system that I use at family gatherings or with Friends who aren't into games. It does have it's limitations though.
