today.reuters.com— Nintendo said on Wednesday it is unlikely to lose much money on the launch of the Wii, in sharp contrast to Sony, which expects a hefty loss on the debut of its PS3.

When new consoles are released, companies take the loss on the hardware and make up the difference in selling games. Nintendo can afford to take a small loss on the console because they have a huge advantage with the Virtual Console. With a library of thousands of games that are already developed and have a fan base, Nintendo should have no trouble remaining profitable.
"All consoles bring a loss at first, it's just the way the market works, nintendo and sony and microsoft have all lost money "This is a bit of a myth. Nintendo has never sold a console under cost. And only the Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox and Xbox 360 (and now PS3) have been priced under cost at launch.
